The Book of Mosques and Places of Prayer-01a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Yahya ibn Yahya narrated to us, saying: Hishim informed us from Sayyar from Yazid al-Faqir from Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah al-Ansari, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I have been conferred upon five (things) which were not granted to anyone before me (and these are): Every apostle wassent particularly to his own people, whereas I have been sent to all the red and the black the spoils of war have been made lawful for me, and these were never made lawful to anyone before me, and the earth has been made sacred and pure and mosque for me, so whenever the time of prayer comes for any one of you he should pray whenever he is, and I have been supported by awe (by which the enemy is overwhelmed) from the distance (which one takes) one month to cover and I have been granted intercession.
Sahih Muslim 521a
.

The Shaykh : This is also from the section on mosques. This hadith contains
the earth has been made sacred and pure and mosque for me
Sahih Muslim 521a
. The point here is that the entire earth is a mosque. In this hadith are the merits of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his five special characteristics:
That every prophet is sent to his own people specifically, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent to all people. The people of Noah do not fall under this, because it is apparent that the people of Noah did not have multiple distinct tribes, as people were not numerous at that time. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent to his people, and his people were all of humanity. For this reason, when the disbelievers who denied him were drowned, Allah made his descendants the ones who remained, from whom humanity multiplied.
And among them is His saying:
the spoils of war have been made lawful for me, and these were never made lawful to anyone before me
Sahih Muslim 521a
. War spoils are what is taken from the disbelievers through fighting, and what is attached to it. These are the war spoils: what is taken from the disbelievers through fighting and what is attached to it. The previous nations, when they took spoils, would gather them, and then fire would descend from the sky and burn them. But for this nation, Allah made war spoils lawful for them, so they can use them to fight the disbelievers again, and for the affairs of their religion and worldly life. "The earth was made for me a pure place of purification and a mosque." In the previous nations, if a worshipper did not find water, he would wait until he found water to perform what he had missed. There is no doubt that this involves hardship that is apparent from one aspect, and from another aspect, it distances the person from his Lord during this period, because prayer is a connection between Allah and the servant. So if he remains, for example, for a month or less or more, he becomes distant from addressing Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and standing before Him.
He said:
so whenever the time of prayer comes for any one of you he should pray whenever he is
Sahih Muslim 521a
. This generality indicates that if a person is prevented from praying in a certain place, there must be evidence for it. Praying in the Ka'bah: performing the obligatory prayer in the Ka'bah is permissible, because it is part of the earth, not the sky. And because it is established that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed voluntary prayers in it. The principle is that the obligatory prayer follows the voluntary prayer, and the voluntary prayer follows the obligatory prayer, unless there is evidence to the contrary.
And among them, he said:
I have been supported by awe (by which the enemy is overwhelmed) from the distance (which one takes) one month to cover
Sahih Muslim 521a
. "I was supported by terror" means that his enemy was terrified of him for a distance of a month's journey. The distance of a month's journey is understood according to what was known among them, meaning by the usual pace of camels, not by the speed of cars or airplanes. There is no doubt that terror is the greatest weapon by which a person triumphs over his enemy, because the terrified one does not have a steady foot; rather, you find him seeking a refuge to flee to. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called it a victory.
And I was given intercession
. This is the great intercession in which the prophets (peace and blessings be upon them) withdraw until it reaches him. This is because the people in the great gathering—may Allah help me and you in it—in the great gathering, they are afflicted with sorrow and distress that they cannot bear. A vast plain, a close sun, mountains moving like dust, great matters. They are afflicted with sorrow and distress that they cannot bear. How long is the day? Fifty thousand years. They seek intercession, coming to Adam, then to Noah, then to Abraham, then to Moses, then to Jesus, until it reaches the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and he intercedes. This is included in the saying of Allah the Exalted:
it is expected that your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station.
[Al-Isra 17:79]
. This is the praised station that Allah promised him. Now, let us return a second time: Is what was given to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) for him and his Ummah?
The answer: Some of it is so, and some of it is not. We start with the first: "The prophet was sent to his own people specifically, and I was sent to all people": Is this for him and his Ummah? No. Good. Second: "War spoils were made lawful for me": This is general for him and the Ummah.
"The earth was made for me a pure place of purification and a mosque": This is general for him and the Ummah.
"I was supported by terror": This is general for him and the Ummah, but the Ummah that follows his guidance and is upon what he was upon, not the Ummah that claims affiliation with him but has neglected many things from what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) brought. Good. "I was given intercession": This is specific. So these special characteristics by which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was distinguished include some that are specific to him and some that are general for his Ummah.
And his saying:
I was given five things
: This is an indefinite noun in the context of affirmation, so it does not indicate restriction or generality, because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was also given other things besides these. He was given approximately twenty special characteristics that were not given to the prophets before him.
