The Book of Mosques and Places of Prayer-08b

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Abu Ghassan al-Masm'iy and Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us, saying: Mu'adh, and he is Ibn Hisham, said: My father narrated to me from Qatadah from Abu Ayyub from Abdullah ibn Amr that the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When you pray Fajr, its time is until the first part of the sun appears. When you pray Zuhr, its time is until 'Asr comes. When you pray 'Asr, its time is until the sun turns yellow. When you pray Maghrib, its time is until the twilight has disappeared. When you pray 'Isha, its time is until half of the night has passed.
Sahih Muslim 612a
.

The Shaykh : This explains the five times. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the most complete explanation, clarifying that Fajr ends when the first horn of the sun rises, meaning when the first part of the sun becomes visible. Then when you pray Zuhr, its time is until 'Asr is present. When you pray 'Asr, its time is until the sun turns yellow. Previous hadiths have indicated that the time for 'Asr extends until sunset, but the time of preference, to which a person is permitted to delay the prayer, is when the sun turns yellow. The sun turning yellow is close to being when the shadow of an object is twice its length, but it differs in summer days from winter days. When it turns yellow, the preferred time for 'Asr ends, and the time of necessity remains, to which a person is not permitted to delay the prayer except in cases of dire necessity.
