The Book of Mosques and Places of Prayer-08b

The reciter: Yahya ibn Yahya al-Tamimi narrated to us, saying: Abdullah ibn Yahya ibn Abi Khatir informed us, saying: I heard my father say: "Knowledge cannot be attained through bodily comfort".
The Shaykh : This should be added to the adornments of the student of knowledge. The saying is that knowledge is not attained, or cannot be attained, through bodily comfort. A person who wants to rest, sleep, go out for a walk, and spend time with his brothers in a way that yields no benefit, cannot attain knowledge. Knowledge requires eagerness, effort, and striving. It is said: Give knowledge your whole self, and you will grasp some of it; if you give it only part of yourself, you will lose it all. This is true, especially when a person recognizes from his own experience that he needs to tend to his knowledge. People differ: some are quick to memorize and slow to forget, some are the opposite, some are equal in their memorization and forgetting, and some are poor in memorization and quick to forget. A person knows from himself; whenever he recognizes that he needs to tend to his knowledge, let him tend to it. Yes, indeed.
