The Book of Mosques and Places of Prayer-10a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: And Ishaq ibn Ibrahim al-Hanbali narrated to us, saying: Shu'ayb ibn Ishaq al-Dimashqi informed us, saying: Al-Awza'i narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Najashi narrated to me, saying: Rafi' ibn Khadij narrated to me, saying:
We used to pray the Maghrib prayer كنا نصلي المغرب
in a manner similar to this.

The Shaykh : In these two hadiths, there is evidence that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) hastened to perform the Maghrib prayer. However, we qualify this by stating that the hastening includes what is related to it, such as performing wudu' and the like. This is based on the fact that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Pray before Maghrib, pray before Maghrib صلوا قبل المغرب صلوا قبل المغرب
Bulugh al-Maram 2:264
He said this three times, and then in the third instance he said:
for whoever wishes لمن شاء
This implies that there is a time between his prayer and the sunset that is sufficient for the prayer of two rak'ahs. Thus, his statement "when the sun has set" and "when it has disappeared" means that he prepares for it by performing wudu' and other preparations from the time the sun sets. As for the hadith of Rafi' ibn Khadij, it also indicates the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) hastening with the Maghrib prayer, because he would leave the prayer while one could still see the places where his arrows had landed. This is evidence that he hastened with it. It also contains an indication that he shortened the recitation in it, because if he had lengthened the recitation, they would not have left in this manner.
