In his saying: (We watched the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) one night until it was near) what is the reason for the raising of "near"?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : In his saying:
We waited for the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon hi n) one night, till it was about midnight. نظرنا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ليلة حتى كان قريبٌ من نصف الليل
Sahih Muslim 640b
?

The Shaykh : It was on the basis that it is a complete sentence. Similarly, "we watched" here means "we waited," like
So are they waiting for the Hour فهل ينظرون إلى الساعة
meaning, "So are they waiting for the Hour?"

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : Until it became, meaning until it came close to the middle of the night. In my copy, in the marginal note, in some manuscripts it says "until it was near."
