The questioner : I am asking about a girl I want to marry. This girl used to commit some mistakes in the past, and I used to commit some mistakes as well. But, praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, after Allah granted us guidance, I began to advise her, so she was guided and became upright on the straight path. By the permission of Allah, she has become one of the worshiping, righteous women. She fasts three days every month, performs the late-night prayer, and prays the Duha prayer, and I am the same, praise be to Allah. I want to marry this girl, and she is the same. I am consulting you and seeking your opinion on this matter: is this girl suitable to become my wife or not? Please inform me, may Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : The reality is that this man who was in contact with this woman all this time, while she was not his wife, has committed a great error. Because his conversation with her must have been long and at multiple times. I consider such an action to be an error, even if a person intends by it to make things right. That is because such a long call and conversation may be a cause of fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) and great evil. So he must repent to Allah the Exalted from this action and not return to anything like it.
As for his marriage to her, I do not issue a fatwa (a scholarly legal ruling) to him about anything, because if we issued a fatwa to him about this matter, it would open the door for others to do what he did. So I say: you must repent to Allah and seek forgiveness from Allah Mighty and Majestic for the conversations that took place between you and this woman, which I do not think were short or few.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
