The reciter: Abdullah ibn Yusuf narrated to us, Malik informed us, from Ibn Shihab, from Sulayman ibn Yasar, from Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said:
The Shaykh : His statement:Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 7:477 Al-Fadl ibn Abbas is the brother of Abdullah ibn Abbas, but Abdullah is better than him, more knowledgeable than him, and more beneficial to the Ummah than him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made him ride behind him during his journey from Muzdalifah to Mina on the day of Eid. Reflect on the great wisdom in the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) handling of the situation when he sent him off from Arafah. Who did he make ride behind him? He made a freed slave from among the freed slaves ride behind him. He did not make any of the senior Companions ride behind him, nor a freed slave from among the freed slaves, nor a young man like Usamah. When he sent him off from Muzdalifah to Mina, he made Al-Fadl ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) ride behind him, meaning the youngest of the People of the House. He did not make Abbas ride behind him, nor did he make anyone else ride behind him, to make it clear that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not want to boast, but rather he was humble. Indeed, he performed Hajj on a shabby camel. A shabby camel means one that is not magnificent or decorated. He did not have people clearing the way in front of him, nor shouting "Make way! Make way!" nor striking people. As the narrator said, "No one was striking" meaning no one was striking to make way for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and no one was clearing the way. He said: "And he did not shout 'Make way! Make way!'" He walked with the people, peace and blessings be upon him. This is part of his humility, and for that reason, hearts were filled with love for him, peace and blessings be upon him. The point is that Al-Fadl was his rider. A woman from Khath'am came, and Al-Fadl kept looking at her, and she kept looking at him. The apparent meaning of the hadith is that the woman was uncovered, because he was looking at her and she was looking at him. It is known that he was looking at her because a man’s face is uncovered and it is known that his gaze is directed toward something. However, we cannot know that she was looking at him unless she was uncovered. And she would not be wearing a face veil, because wearing a face veil for women in the state of Ihram is forbidden. So she was uncovered, with her face uncovered, looking at this man. And Al-Fadl was handsome, meaning beautiful. A woman with men is like a man with women. Women take the minds of men Sahih al-Bukhari 304, and a woman is likewise; her heart attaches to beauty more, so she was looking at him and he was looking at her. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned Al-Fadl’s face to the other side out of fear of fitnah. So she asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Sahih al-Bukhari 1513
Al-Fadl was riding behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). A woman from Khath'am came, and Al-Fadl kept looking at her, and she kept looking at him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned Al-Fadl’s face to the other side. She said: O Messenger of Allah, the obligation of Allah upon His servants in Hajj has overtaken my father, an old man who cannot sit firmly on the mount. Should I perform Hajj on his behalf? He said: Yes. And this was during the Farewell Pilgrimage.
The Shaykh : His statement:
