Chapter: The saying of Allah the Exalted: “And when Abraham said, ‘My Lord, make this city safe, and keep me and my descendants from worshipping idols. My Lord, indeed they have led much of mankind astray. So whoever follows me is of me, and whoever disobeys me—You are the Forgiver, the Merciful. Our Lord, I have settled a portion of my descendants in a valley without cultivation, near Your Sacred House. Our Lord, [I did so] that they may establish prayer. So make the hearts of some of the people incline toward them…”

The Reciter: Chapter: The saying of Allah the Exalted:
(35) And [mention, O Muhammad], when Abraham said, "My Lord, make this city [Makkah] secure and keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols. (36) My Lord, indeed they have led astray many among the people. So whoever follows me - then he is of me; and whoever disobeys me - indeed, You are [yet] Forgiving and Merciful. (37) Our Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in an uncultivated valley near Your sacred House, our Lord, that they may establish prayer. So make hearts among the people incline toward them وإذ قال إبراهيم رب اجعل هذا البلد آمنا واجنبني وبني أن نعبد الأصنام رب إنهن أضللن كثيرا من الناس فمن تبعني فإنه مني ومن عصاني فإنك غفور رحيم ربنا إني أسكنت من ذريتي بواد غير ذي زرع عند بيتك المحرم ربنا ليقيموا الصلاة فاجعل أفئدة من الناس تهوي إليهم
[Ibrahim 14:35-37]
the verse

The Shaykh : The author (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned only verses in this chapter, as if there were no hadith meeting his criteria. This is the chapter of His saying, Blessed and Exalted is He:
And [mention, O Muhammad], when Abraham said, "My Lord, make this city [Makkah] secure وإذ قال إبراهيم رب اجعل هذا البلد ءامناً
[Ibrahim 14:35]
meaning: "And remember when He said," and Ibrahim: he is al-Khalil (peace be upon him), the leader of the Hanifs.
My Lord, make this city safe
This is a supplication after the completion of the building.
make this city [Makkah] secure and keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols.
[Ibrahim 14:35]
,
And keep me واجنبني
meaning: Make me and my descendants keep away from the worship of idols. An idol is anything worshipped other than Allah, whether it is stone, wood, moon, sun, or otherwise. And His saying:
Keep me and my descendants
Did Allah answer his supplication? We say that regarding his direct sons, Allah answered his supplication. But as for his descendants after that, some of them worshipped idols; for example, Quraysh worshipped idols. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, is Wise; He answers some supplications and not others, and He answers part of a single supplication and not the rest.
My Lord, indeed they have led astray many among the people
[Ibrahim 14:36]
meaning: the idols led astray, i.e., they became a cause of misguidance for many people.
So whoever follows me - then he is of me
[Ibrahim 14:36]
because he was guided by his guidance.
and whoever disobeys me - indeed, You are [yet] Forgiving and Merciful.
[Ibrahim 14:36]
This is the supplication of Ibrahim (peace be upon him), a compassionate and merciful supplication. He did not say, "As for those who disobeyed me, bring down Your wrath upon them." He said:
indeed, You are [yet] Forgiving and Merciful.
[Ibrahim 14:36]
This is not for disobedience unless the disobedience is less than shirk (associating partners with Allah), for Allah may forgive it. But shirk is not forgiven. However, the supplication for forgiveness for the mushrik (one who associates partners with Allah) means that he is granted success in Islam and tawhid (the oneness of Allah), and then he is forgiven.
Our Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in an uncultivated valley
[Ibrahim 14:37]
to the end of it.
Our Lord, I have settled
[Ibrahim 14:37]
meaning: He made them dwell.
of my offspring من ذريتي
The "min" here indicates partiality, and the intended meaning is Isma'il and his sons. As for Ishaq and his sons, they are in the Levant.
some of my descendants in an uncultivated valley
[Ibrahim 14:37]
Yes, in a valley, because Makkah, may Allah honor it, is a valley between mountains.
[Ibrahim 14:37]
meaning: it is not cultivated.
near Your sacred House
[Ibrahim 14:37]
This is a virtue of the House, that it is muharram, meaning it is prohibited to desecrate, i.e., it is respected. And His saying:
Our Lord, that they may establish prayer
This is evidence of the importance of prayer, especially in Makkah at the House of Allah the Sacred.
So make hearts among the people incline toward them
[Ibrahim 14:37]
He said, "Hearts of some people," and did not say "the hearts of people," because Hajj (the major pilgrimage) is not obligatory for everyone, but only for the one who is able. Some scholars said that if he had said, "The hearts of people incline toward it," and Allah had answered it, it would have become obligatory for all people to perform Hajj. In this is a hardship that is apparent, but Allah inspired Ibrahim (peace be upon him) to say:
among the people incline toward them
[Ibrahim 14:37]
, and this is the reality. No believing Muslim is there whose heart does not incline toward the Sacred House, and who does not wish to perform Hajj every year and 'Umrah (the lesser pilgrimage) every month. This is something Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has placed in the hearts of the servants; no one has any hand in it.
and provide for them from the fruits that they might be grateful.
[Ibrahim 14:37]
And Allah, Exalted is He, answered his supplication by making the hearts of some people incline toward it and providing them with fruits, as He, Exalted is He, said:
Have we not established for them a safe sanctuary
[Al-Qasas 28:57]
Complete it, O Adam.
to which are brought the fruits of all things as provision from Us? But most of them do not know.
[Al-Qasas 28:57]
, Yes.
