Explanation of the author's statement: And Khalil (peace be upon him) said: "And keep me and my descendants away from worshipping idols"

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And his descendants asked about... The difficulty lies in the issue of the daughters, as he also said in the first instance. But it remains for us that his supplication was not answered. He said: It is not necessary that his supplication be answered. It is not required that when one calls upon Allah, Allah must answer his call, just as the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated for something and it was not granted. Yes, he supplicated that Allah would not place enmity among his Ummah, but Allah prevented that from happening. He prevented that. So we say that the most likely view, and Allah knows best, is that he intended generality. He intended generality, and Allah the Exalted, by His wisdom, did not grant him this regarding all of his descendants. This is the most likely view. Yes.
The student: ... that Ibrahim (peace be upon him) did not know his ruling

The Shaykh : how
The student: ... he mentioned among them the believer and the disbeliever

The Shaykh : No, it may be hidden from him. No, he is a human being, meaning he...
The student: ...

The Shaykh : He is not of his descendants. Yes, this matter may be hidden from him, and he may not know that his descendants will remain until the Day of Resurrection. Yes, and also he may have said
Our Lord, and send among them a messenger from themselves ربنا وابعث فيهم رسولا منهم
[Al-Baqarah 2:129]
This is what is consistent.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Yes
The student: ...

The Shaykh : The guidance... something is raised against it, but we... and that we do not know that Ibrahim had any sons other than Isma'il and Ishaq, and the verse is in the context of the plural. But this is a simple answer to it: if we say that the minimum for the plural is two, the difficulty is resolved. And Allah knows best.
The student: He knew that his descendants were prophets

The Shaykh : Yes
The student: He knew that the one upon whom are prayers and peace... it is apparent that his descendants were prophets...

The Shaykh : Okay, yes, yes.
The student: It is raised against it that... the infallible ones

The Shaykh : Yes
The student: It has no benefit

The Shaykh : No, may Allah reward you. This supplication was before he knew. This supplication was before he knew.
The student: No...

The Shaykh : Yes, yes, yes. "
keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols. واجنبني وبني أن نعبد الأصنام
[Ibrahim 14:35]
"
Okay, so Ibrahim says "keep me away," meaning place me on one side and the idols on the other side. And this is more eloquent than if he had said "prevent me from worshipping the idols," because if he is on one side and the idols are on the other side, that becomes further and more eloquent. Further and more eloquent. So it is more eloquent than if he had said "prevent me and my descendants from worshipping the idols"
keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols. واجنبني وبني أن نعبد الأصنام
[Ibrahim 14:35]

Okay, did Ibrahim (peace be upon him) fear shirk for himself or not? Ibrahim, the intimate friend of Allah and the leader of the Hanifs, feared shirk for himself. So what about us? Yes, so do not feel safe from shirk. No one is safe from hypocrisy except a hypocrite, and no one fears hypocrisy except a believer. For this reason, Ibn Abi Mulaikah said: " I met thirty of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), all of whom feared hypocrisy for themselves." And 'Umar held Hudhayfah and said, come.
I challenge you by Allah, he said to Hudhayfah, did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) name you for me among those he named as hypocrites? أنشدك الله يقول لحذيفة هل سماني لك رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم مع من سمى من المنافقين
'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), the righteous, strong Imam, challenged Hudhayfah: Did the Messenger name you among those he named as hypocrites? Allah is the Greatest.
The student: O Shaykh

The Shaykh : Yes
The student: Okay, how many surahs...

The Shaykh : The hypocrisy that was mentioned, the one that Allah named him, because (may Allah be pleased with him) he himself said that he did actions regarding the matter of Hudaybiyyah hoping that Allah would expiate them for him. Yes, yes.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : No, no, it is not shirk in belief. It may be, for example, according to his statement, that later on it becomes so, reaching the level of hypocrisy, which does not harm. He said.
The student : Shaykh

The Shaykh : Yes
The student: ... that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him glad tidings of Paradise

The Shaykh : Who?
The student: 'Umar

The Shaykh : Yes, but yes, he gave him glad tidings of Paradise, that is correct. But a person fears for himself. He fears that the Messenger's glad tidings were based on what he saw of his actions at that time. The fearful person fears everything. Yes.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : No, on the contrary, it is required that he not be a hypocrite. But he feared because he is a person of intense fear. He feared that the Messenger gave him glad tidings of Paradise based on what he saw of his actions in his life, and he does not know what happened to him after his death. For this reason, you know the hadith in which the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I will say, 'O Lord, my companions!' It will be said, 'You do not know what they did after you had left.' أقول أصحابي فيقال إنك لا تدري ما أحدثوا بعدك
Sahih al-Bukhari 6576

The student: Entry into Paradise is certain

The Shaykh : Yes
The student: Entry into Paradise is guaranteed for them

The Shaykh : Yes, but he says it is possible, he himself, due to the strength of his fear, says it is possible that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him glad tidings of Paradise based on what he saw of my actions in his time, and I fear that there may be something else.
The student: He did not... the statement of 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)... regarding the fear of this, meaning if 'Umar, for whom Paradise was guaranteed, is in this state, then others are even more so.

The Shaykh : This... this is not appropriate, because the original principle is that speech remains on its literal meaning. Because some scholars object to this, following this path in this and other matters, even in what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) does... things, saying this was intended as a reason, or intended to clarify to others, or that he says "My Lord, forgive me," and the Messenger did not say "My Lord, forgive me" for the sake of sins, but to teach people. This is contrary to the original principle. He said:
keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols. واجنبني وبني أن نعبد الأصنام
[Ibrahim 14:35]
Okay, "that we worship," what does it mean grammatically? Object... "keep me away from worshipping idols." "Idols" is the plural of "sanim." And it is said "sanim" and "wathn." Is there a difference between them? Yes. They say the difference is that a "wathn" is anything worshipped other than Allah, in whatever form. Everything worshipped other than Allah is a "wathn." And in the hadith, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
O Allah! Do not make my grave an idol that is worshipped. اللهم لا تجعل قبري وثنا يعبد
Muwatta Malik 9:93
And as for the "sanim," it is what is made in the image of a human being. What is made in the image of a human being and worshipped other than Allah. And this is the difference between them. So the "wathn" is broader than the "sanim" in this regard.
keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols. واجنبني وبني أن نعبد الأصنام
[Ibrahim 14:35]
And there is no doubt that Ibrahim (peace be upon him) asked Allah the Exalted for steadfastness in tawhid (the oneness of Allah), because if... worshipping idols, or if
So he must remain upon the tawhid of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). And the point of the evidence from this verse is that Ibrahim feared shirk, and he was the leader of the Hanifs and their master, except for the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).
