The Shaykh : Combining the two prayers, meaning the midday and afternoon prayers, is established by the Sunnah, and it is a combination by advancing the later prayer, even though the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) was staying at 'Arafah. However, this combination has reasons, among which is that the people are gathered and will then disperse to their respective standing places, so their praying in congregation while gathered is better than them praying the midday prayer gathered and the afternoon prayer dispersed. For this reason, combining is permitted in the rain, meaning in towns, even though it is possible for each person to pray in his home due to the excuse. But combining for the rain is for the sake of achieving the congregation; otherwise, it would be said: Pray the sunset prayer, then go and pray in your homes. Another reason is to allow time for the standing, as the people have purposes such as lunch, sleep, or other things, so the afternoon prayer is advanced so that the time for supplication comes while they are free.
