Explanation of the Book of Foods-03a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Muhammad ibn Kathir narrated to us, Sufyan informed us, from al-A'mash, from Abu Hazim, from Abu Hurayrah, who said:
The Prophet (ﷺ) never criticized any food (he was invited to) but he used to eat if he liked the food, and leave it if he disliked it. ما عاب النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم طعامًا قط إن اشتهاه أكله وإن كرهه تركه
Sahih al-Bukhari 5409

The Shaykh : Likewise, one should not criticize food if it is permissible for him to eat it; otherwise, he should leave it. However, if he mentions what is wrong with it by way of reporting it for the sake of improvement in the future, there is nothing wrong with that and no blame on him. For example, he might say to his family, "Your food today is undercooked, or it is salty today, or it is hot today." This is not intended as criticism, but rather as reporting so that they may be alert in the future. It may also be said that there is another distinction between criticizing the maker or the product—which is what the Messenger did not do—and criticizing the product as opposed to the maker. For instance, saying to the one who cooked it today, "Your cooking is not good, we need another cook," or something similar, is permissible. Yes, that is correct.
