Explanation of the Book of Marriage-18

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : He said: "And from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) never criticized any food ما عاب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم طعاما قط
Sunan Ibn Majah 3259Sahih (Darussalam)
"
:
May Allah send blessings and peace upon him.
Never criticized ما عاب
Meaning: He did not mention it with a defect, such as saying: This is salty, this is sour, this is *khanas*. Do you know what *khanas* is?
*Khanas*: little salt, and *maliḥ* is excess salt. Yes, here, what is it?
The student: *Dal'.

The Shaykh : *Dal'?
The student: Yes.

The Shaykh : So this is *dali'. Yes, this is *khanas*. Is there a third language after this?
The student: *A'jaf.

The Shaykh : *A'adam, *adil?
The student: *A'jaf with a fa'.

The Shaykh : *A'jaf. Is there a fourth language?
Hm?
The student: *Ḥamid.

The Shaykh : *Ḥamid, and what is that? That is enough, four languages are sufficient. In any case, it means the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) does not mention food with a defect at all, whether the defect relates to the preparation or to the food itself.
Sometimes a person is served fruit that looks good and beautiful, and he sits down, but its taste is poor, so you find him criticizing it, saying: For example, this is deceptive, this is a hypocrite, and the like. It deceives with its appearance, but its inside is bad. This is contrary to the guidance of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Now, his saying:
Never criticized food ما عاب طعاما
: Does this include the preparation of food, or is it specific to the food itself?
The apparent view is the latter, and that if a person criticizes the preparation of food in order to correct his family in their cooking, there is no harm in it. For example, he might say to his family: Today's dinner is salty, you added salt; the dinner is hot, you delayed in cooking it; yes, the tea is bitter, and the like. You failed us in front of the guests. Yes, this is not a problem, because the defect here is in the preparation or the cook, not in the food.
Then he clarified the guidance of the Prophet (may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him):
If he liked anything, he ate it and if he did not like it he left it. كان إذا اشتهى شيئا أكله وإن كرهه تركه
Sahih Muslim 2064a
And by this, a person finds relief; he is relieved from worry and sadness. If food is served, if you desire it, eat it, and if you dislike it, do not eat it.
