The reciter: Isma'il narrated to us, saying: Malik narrated to me from Abu al-Nadr, the freed slave of 'Umar ibn 'Ubayd Allah, from Nafi', the freed slave of Abu Qatadah, from Abu Qatadah:
That he was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) until they reached a certain part of the road to Makkah. He lagged behind with some of his companions who were in a state of ihram, while he himself was not in a state of ihram. He saw a wild donkey, so he mounted his horse and then asked his companions to hand him a whip, but they refused. He then asked them for his spear, but they refused. He took it and charged at the donkey, killing it. Some of the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ate from it, while others refused. When they caught up with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), they asked him about it, and he said: "It is only food that Allah has provided for you."
