If a person owns land and intends to sell it if a good price is offered, is zakah due on it?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Shaykh, may Allah preserve you
There is land that has not been used for ten or fifteen years, approximately, and its owner intends to sell it if a price is offered. Is zakah due on this?

The Shaykh : By Allah, if this man who has land is waiting for someone to buy it, and he is one of those who trade in land, then zakah is due on it, even if it remains for years. But if it is land he has that he no longer needs and wants to sell, but no customer has come to buy it, then no zakah is due on it.

The questioner : Shaykh, does he pay zakah for one year or for the ten years?

The Shaykh : No, no, it is all the same, whether one year or ten years. The matter depends on the intention, because land, vessels, furnishings, and the like, which are goods for trade, have no zakah due on them unless he intends them for trade.
