The Hadith of Mu'adh (Do you know what is the right of the servants upon Allah and the right of Allah upon the servants?)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Your Eminence, the hadith of Mu'adh ibn Jabal in which he says:
I was riding behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a donkey, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Do you know what is the right of Allah upon the servants, O Mu'adh? Do you know what is the right of Allah upon the servants and what is the right of the servants upon Allah? I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: The right of Allah upon the servants is that they worship Him and do not associate anything with Him, and the right of the servants upon Allah is that He does not punish whoever does not associate anything with Him. I said: O Messenger of Allah, should I not give the people good news? He said: Do not give them good news, lest they become complacent.
Do the Companions know about this hadith?

The Shaykh : Is it?

The questioner : Do the Companions know the right of Allah upon the servants and the right of the servants upon Allah?

The Shaykh : They know it through the explanation of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him):
To worship Him (Allah) Alone and to join none in worship with Him (Allah). أن يعبدوه ولا يشركوا به شيئا
Sahih al-Bukhari 7373
Did you understand?

The questioner : Do you mean they knew about this hadith?

The Shaykh : They knew it after Mu'adh informed them, because when the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Do not inform them, lest they become complacent لا تخبرهم فيتكلوا
Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) feared that he had concealed this hadith at the time of his death, so he narrated it in its exact wording. If he narrated it in its exact wording, there is no blame on him. But if he had not informed the people of it, the people would not have known it, and in that case, he would have been concealing a Sunnah from the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).

The questioner : Your Eminence, the Shaykh.

The Shaykh : Is your difficulty resolved? I say: Is the difficulty resolved for you?

The questioner : Yes, I do.

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah. Yes.
