When is the supplication for seeking guidance (Istikhara) performed?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : May Allah bless you, O Shaykh. In the prayer for seeking guidance, some scholars said that the supplication is recited inside the prayer, either in the tashahhud or in the sujud. What is the correct view?

The Shaykh : Do you have the hadith of Istikhara memorized? Read it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Read the hadith. How do you say it? You memorized it a little while ago; give us its meaning.

The questioner : If a matter is difficult for any of us, let him pray two rak'ahs.

The Shaykh : Then.

The questioner : Then let him make du'a.

The Shaykh : Then let him say
then let him pray two Rak’ah of non- obligatory prayer, then say: Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi ‘ilmika فليصل ركعتين ثم ليقل : اللهم إني أستخيرك بعلمك
Sunan Ibn Majah 1383Sahih (Darussalam)
Who said this? Who is the one who narrated this hadith?

The questioner : The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

The Shaykh : Did the Messenger know the Arabic language or not?

The questioner : He knew it.

The Shaykh : Did he know that
Then ثم
indicates sequence or not?

The questioner : He knew it.

The Shaykh : Did he know that when he said: "Let him pray, then let him say," he intended it to be in that order or not? Answer: He intended that. The answer ends here. After the taslim, since the Messenger said:
Let him pray two rak'ahs, then let him say فليصل ركعتين ثم ليقل
and did not say: "Then let him say" during the two rak'ahs, do you understand? Yes. In reality, I think that Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) is among those who say that it is recited before the salam, but we do not agree with him on this, as long as we have the explicit text of the hadith. You see, I say: I think that Shaykh al-Islam—I do not know if he said it or not—but if he or anyone else said it, the reference is to Allah and the Messenger.

The questioner : Do I raise my hands?

The Shaykh : There is no obstacle; raise your hand. And with this, this session ends. And: Glory be to You, O Allah, our Lord, and praise be to You. I bear witness that there is no deity but You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance. And I bid you all farewell to facilitate your departure, if Allah wills. And all praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
