Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Allah related the words of the son of Adam, meaning the one who killed his brother, that he said:
"O woe to me! Have I failed to be like this crow and hide the body of my brother?" And he became of the regretful.
[Al-Ma'idah 5:31]
On what did the regret that occurred in him center?

The Shaykh : The apparent meaning is that he became one of the regretters regarding the killing of his brother, regarding the killing of his brother. It is possible that he regretted both this and that. However, regarding his being like this crow, it can be said that he did not regret it because it was not in his power. It can also be said, yes. It can also be said that he regretted it because he was ignorant of this matter. The confirmed thing is that he regretted the killing of his brother; there is no doubt in this.

The questioner : Did he regret the killing of his brother, or did he regret it because it was a sin?

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : Did he regret it from the aspect that it was a sin, or regarding the mere killing of his brother?

The Shaykh : That it was a sin.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : A sin and a blame?

The questioner : I said: Did he regret it, for example, because it was a sin, or because, for example, he simply killed him?

The Shaykh : Allah knows best, Allah knows best. Is it a sin? Did he regret it because it was a sin, or because he killed him, meaning he was tired of it? Yes, after the oath.
