If the iqamah is called and a person is in a voluntary prayer, does he break it off with a salam or without a salam?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Peace be upon you.

The Shaykh : Peace be upon you.

The questioner : A man began the sunnah prayer, meaning the two rak'ahs before the Zuhr prayer, and the iqamah was called. Does he break off the prayer with two taslims or without two taslims? And what is your guidance, O your Eminence?

The Shaykh : If the iqamah is called and a person is in a voluntary prayer, if he is in the second rak'ah, he should complete it briefly, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever catches a raka of the prayer has caught the prayer. من أدرك ركعة من الصلاة فقد أدرك الصلاة
Muwatta Malik 1:15
This is because he caught up with a rak'ah before it was prohibited. As for if he is in the first rak'ah, he should break it off, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
When the Iqamah has been called for the Salat then there is no Salat except the obligatory. إذا أقيمت الصلاة فلا صلاة إلا المكتوبة
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 421Sahih (Darussalam)
This is the detail in this issue. Although the scholars differed on it, this is the closest to the truth.

The questioner : Does he say the salam or not?

The Shaykh : No, he does not say the salam. If he breaks it off, he does not say the salam, because the salam is only at the end of the prayer, and he has not reached the end of this one.
