Is it permissible to perform a voluntary prayer when the iqamah for the obligatory prayer is called, and how does one discontinue it?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : May Allah reward you with good. He says:The questioner : Many people perform voluntary prayers.

The Shaykh : Many.

The questioner : Many people perform voluntary prayers while the imam is praying the Fajr prayer. Is this permissible?

The Shaykh : It is not permissible for a person to perform a voluntary prayer once the prayer has been called for, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When the Iqamah has been called for the Salat then there is no Salat except the obligatory. إذا أقيمت الصلاة فلا صلاة إلا المكتوبة
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 421Sahih (Darussalam)
Therefore, if he performs a voluntary prayer, it is not valid because it is prohibited. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected. من عمل عملا ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718b
meaning it is rejected. So how can one do an act that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has prohibited? However, if the prayer has been called for and a person is in the middle of a voluntary prayer, there is a distinction. We say: if he is in the second rak'ah, he should complete it quickly; if he is in the first rak'ah, he should discontinue it. The evidence for this distinction is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever catches a raka of the prayer has caught the prayer. من أدرك ركعة من الصلاة فقد أدرك الصلاة
Muwatta Malik 1:15
So this man, for whom the prayer was called while he was in the second rak'ah, has already performed a complete rak'ah before the prohibition arrived, so his voluntary prayer is valid. But if he is in the first rak'ah, he should discontinue it and join the imam.

The questioner : With a salam, or without a salam, O Shaykh?

The Shaykh : Without a salam, because the salam is only at the conclusion of the prayer.
