Exegesis of the final verses of Surat al-Najm.

The Shaykh : We are at the end of Surat al-Najm, where we previously concluded with the words of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He: [An-Najm 53:49] Yes
To His saying, Exalted is He: This means that Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, is the One who expands provision for whom He wills and restricts it. He is the One who enriches, meaning He enriches whom He wills from His creation, and He makes them affluent. It is said that its meaning is "He impoverishes" because it is the opposite of "enriches." It is also said: "He enriches with sufficiency and makes affluent with what exceeds sufficiency." This means that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, expanded provision for the servants, so some He enriched beyond others, and some He made affluent, meaning He gave them wealth, which is the excess over sufficiency. As we have mentioned repeatedly, if a word can be understood in two meanings that do not contradict each other and there is no evidence preferring one over the other, then it is to be understood as both, because that is broader in meaning. The One who enriches is Allah, and the One who makes affluent is Allah, Mighty and Majestic. It is not these idols, namely al-Lat, al-‘Uzza, and Manat, but rather that belongs to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, alone. [An-Najm 53:50-51] This means that Allah, the Exalted, is indeed [An-Najm 53:49] He is the Lord of the Pleiades. The demonstrative pronoun was used to emphasize the sentence, and means: its Creator, its Owner, and its Manager. The Pleiades is the bright star that appears in the intense heat. He specified this star because some of the Arabs used to worship it and revere it. So He, Blessed and Exalted is He, clarified that the Pleiades is among the created beings that are managed, so it is not a god and does not deserve to be worshipped.
Meaning: Allah, Mighty and Majestic. [An-Najm 53:50] They are the people of Hud, and is a descriptive attribute that reveals, not a restrictive attribute. This means there is not a "first 'Ad" and a "second 'Ad"; it is one, but it is the ancient, previous 'Ad. Therefore, He described it as "the first," meaning the ancient, previous one, and there is no other 'Ad.
'Ad were the people of Hud, and Allah, the Exalted, had given them strength, vigor, and severe force that no others had, to the extent that they said:[Fussilat 41:15] So Allah, the Exalted, said: [Fussilat 41:15] These people boasted of their strength and power, so Allah, the Exalted, destroyed them with the gentlest of things. He destroyed them with a scorching, violent wind [Al-Haqqah 69:7] that began after dawn and ended at sunset. So the days were eight, and the nights? Seven. [Al-Haqqah 69:7] It carried the people to the top and then threw them to the ground, so they became like the trunks of empty date palms, refuge in Allah, or [Al-Qamar 54:20] So these people, despite their severe force and fierce might, that did not prevent them from the punishment of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. And His saying means: and He destroyed Thamud and did not leave them. Thamud were the people of al-Hijr. Allah sent to them Salih, but they denied him. Allah, the Exalted, had given them strength, and He had given them knowledge and understanding of engineering, the engineering of construction. But despite that, they did not avert what Allah intended for them. They were shouted at, and the earth trembled with them, so they became prostrate in their homes, refuge in Allah.
[Adh-Dhariyat 51:46] He destroyed them by drowning, as Allah, the Exalted, said in Surat: [Al-Qamar 54:1] He said about their prophet Noah: [Al-Qamar 54:10-11] And in a reading: which indicates abundance and severe opening. [Al-Qamar 54:11] Meaning: it descended with severity. [Al-Qamar 54:12] The entire earth became springs, meaning there was no place of a span but it was gushing, even the oven, which is the place for kindling fire, began to gush, even though the place for kindling fire is the farthest from moisture. But it gushed, so the entire earth became springs, and the sky rained the water of the sky and the water of the earth. Meaning: a decreed, limited amount without increase or decrease. Glory to Allah, the Great. So the people drowned until the water reached the tops of the mountains. It is mentioned that a woman was with a boy, and as the water rose, she climbed the mountain. As the water rose, she climbed the mountain until the water reached the top of the mountain and reached the woman, and it rose in her body. She was with a boy, so she carried the boy in her hands, lifting him so that he would not drown before her. It came in the hadith: But when the word of Allah becomes true, there is no repeller for the decree of Allah, the Exalted. May Allah protect us and you from the painful punishment.
And His saying:[An-Najm 53:52] The exegetes differed regarding His saying: [An-Najm 53:52] It was said: the pronoun refers only to the people of Noah. And it was said: it refers to all the nations that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, mentioned whom He destroyed. According to the first opinion, the meaning is that the people of Noah were more unjust and more rebellious than the people of Thamud and 'Ad. The reason for this is that they displayed arrogance and pride over a long period, as Noah, peace and blessings be upon him, remained among them for a thousand years minus fifty years. Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said about him: [Nuh 71:5-7] so that they would not hear. They covered them so that they would not see. This indicates the severity of their hatred for what he, peace and blessings be upon him, was calling them to. So they were more unjust and more rebellious than 'Ad and whom? And Thamud.
And according to the second opinion, that the pronoun refers to all these nations, the meaning is that these were more unjust and more rebellious than the Quraysh who denied you, O Muhammad. So this is a consolation for the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, that Allah, the Exalted, destroyed these people even though they were more unjust and more rebellious than your people. And the One who destroyed those who came before is capable of destroying those who came after. And both meanings are correct: these nations were more unjust and more rebellious than the Quraysh, and the people of Noah were more unjust and more rebellious than 'Ad and Thamud.
Then He, Mighty and Majestic, said: Meaning: He cast down. They are the settlements of the people of Lot. Meaning: He sent down. And the exegetes differed regarding His saying: Is the meaning that He cast them down from above to below, based on the fact that Allah, the Exalted, raised these settlements up and then overturned them? Or is the meaning that He cast down, meaning He sent down stones upon them until the building collapsed, so the top of the building became what? Its bottom. The important thing is that Allah, the Exalted, informed about the people of Lot that Allah cast them down, meaning He dropped them, whether from the air or from the collapse of the top of the building onto its bottom.
Meaning: He covered them. And His saying: is vague for the purpose of magnification and glorification, like His saying, Exalted is He: [Taha 20:78] Meaning: something great covered them. So vagueness is sometimes intended for magnification, intimidation, and glorification, as in this verse.
[An-Najm 53:54-55] The question here is for rebuke, and you doubt. Al-ala' means blessings. So: with which blessings of Allah do you doubt, O man? Since it is obligatory for a person to acknowledge the blessings of Allah and thank Allah for them, not to doubt and say: this is from my work, this is from such and such, this is from such and such, as the Arabs used to say: "We rained by the constellation such and such" meaning by the star, and they forget the Creator, Mighty and Majestic.
Then He, Glorious and Exalted, said:[An-Najm 53:56] This is the one referred to, the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him and his family. Meaning: a warner. The warner is the one who informs about something with the intent of frightening, because warning is informing with fear, and good news is informing with hope. [An-Najm 53:56] And He did not say: a bringer of good news, because the context only requires mentioning the warning. Since Allah spoke from the beginning of the surah to the end about the Quraysh and their denial of the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, and their worship of idols, He says: Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, is a warner from among the previous warners, meaning from among the previous messengers. So just as those who denied the messengers were afflicted with punishment and retribution, you, O deniers of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, are about to be afflicted with retribution and punishment. Because Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, is like the others, a warner from among the warners. If he is a warner from among the warners, then whoever denies him will be afflicted with what befell the previous nations.
Meaning: the Resurrection has drawn near. The Resurrection, and azafa means to draw near. From this is the saying of the poet:
"The departure has drawn near, except that our mounts *** Have not yet settled on their saddles, as if it were so"
The approaching Hour is the Day of Resurrection, for the Hour is near, as Allah the Exalted said:[Ash-Shuraa 42:17] And He the Exalted said in the second verse: [Al-Ahzab 33:63] So it is near. The indication of its nearness is that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Seal of the Messengers, which means that the matter is close. And even though Allah the Exalted mentions that the matter is near, how much time is between us and the revelation of the Qur'an? How much? How many centuries? Fourteen centuries, and we are in the fifteenth. Yet Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: "Indeed, the Hour is near." From this, we know that the life of the world is long and distant. But do we take the word of those who guess and say: "The age of the past world was such and such"? No, we do not believe them, nor do we deny them. Sometimes they say: "They found traces of an animal from such and such millions of years ago, or stones, or the like." We neither believe nor deny this, because they do not know the unseen of the past; they only estimate it based on the present. For example, they estimate the age of this trace according to the influences in the current time. But what tells us that the influences in the current time are the same as the influences in the past? We do not know. The weather may change from heat to cold, and from cold to heat, and the winds and rains may change, among other things. So, regarding what we read or hear of the sciences of these people, our position is that we neither believe nor deny. As for the future, we must deny everyone who reports about a future event. We must deny them. Why? Yes, because they claim knowledge of the unseen, and Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: [An-Naml 27:65] So we say to them: Meaning: The Resurrection has drawn near. But can we determine the extent of its nearness? No, it is not possible. Whoever claims to know when the Hour will occur is denying Allah and His Messenger. As for Allah, He the Exalted said: [Al-Ahzab 33:63] And as for the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), when Jibril asked him, he said: Meaning: If you do not know it, then I am like you. So whoever claims that the Hour will occur after, for example, a million years, or a hundred thousand years, or less or more, we must deny him and say: He is a disbeliever, because he is denying Allah and His Messenger.
[An-Najm 53:58] This has two meanings: The first meaning is that "revealer" means "preventer," meaning that no one who reveals it can prevent it, as in His saying, the Exalted: [An-Naml 27:62]
The second meaning is that "revealer" means "knower," one who reveals it and makes it clear. In any case, no one can prevent the occurrence of the Hour if Allah wills, and no one has knowledge of when the Hour will be. Then Allah the Exalted said: Until the next lesson, if Allah wills. Questions, the guests are more entitled.
And that it is He who is the Lord of Sirius
To His saying, Exalted is He:
And that He is the Most Rich, the Most Generous
(50) And that He destroyed the first [people of] 'Aad (51) And Thamud - and He did not spare [them] -
And that it is He who is the Lord of Sirius
Lord of the Star
And that He
وَأَنَّهُdestroyed the first [people of] 'Aad
أَهْلَكَ عَاداً الْأُولَىthe first
Ad were the people of Hud, and Allah, the Exalted, had given them strength, vigor, and severe force that no others had, to the extent that they said:
Who is greater than us in strength?
Did they not consider that Allah who created them was greater than them in strength? But they were rejecting Our signs.
Which Allah imposed upon them for seven nights and eight days in succession
سَخَّرَهَا عَلَيْهِمْ سَبْعَ لَيَالٍ وَثَمَانِيَةَ أَيَّامٍ حُسُوماًfor seven nights and eight days in succession, so you would see the people therein fallen as if they were hollow trunks of palm trees.
And [We destroyed] the people of Noah before
The Hour has come near, and the moon has split [in two].
(10) So he invoked his Lord, "Indeed, I am overpowered, so help." (11) Then We opened the gates of the heaven with rain pouring down
Then We opened
فَفَتَّحْنَاgates of the heaven with rain pouring down
And caused the earth to burst with springs
By a command that had been decreed
If Allah had shown mercy to anyone, He would have shown mercy to the mother of the boy
And His saying:
Indeed, it was they who were [even] more unjust and oppressing.
Indeed, it was they who were [even] more unjust and oppressing.
(5) He said, "My Lord, indeed I invited my people [to truth] night and day. (6) But my invitation increased them not except in flight. (7) And indeed, every time I invited them that You may forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears
قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّي دَعَوْتُ قَوْمِي لَيْلاً وَنَهَاراً * فَلَمْ يَزِدْهُمْ دُعَائي إِلَّا فِرَاراً * وَإِنِّي كُلَّمَا دَعَوْتُهُمْ لِتَغْفِرَ لَهُمْ جَعَلُوا أَصَابِعَهُمْ فِي آذَانِهِمْand they would cover themselves with their garments
And they were arrogant with great arrogance.
Then He, Mighty and Majestic, said:
and the overturned city, He sent down
وَالْمُؤْتَفِكَةَ أَهْوَىand the overturned city
He sent down
He sent down
So that which covered it covered it
غَشَّاهَاthat which covered it
مَا غَشَّىand there covered them from the sea that which covered them,
(54) And covered them by that which He covered. (55) Then which of the favors of your Lord do you doubt?
Then He, Glorious and Exalted, said:
This [Prophet] is a warner like the former warners.
This [Prophet] is a warner like the former warners.
The Hour has drawn near
The Hour
The departure has drawn near, except that our mounts *** Have not yet settled on their saddles, as if it were so"
The approaching Hour is the Day of Resurrection, for the Hour is near, as Allah the Exalted said:
And what will make you perceive? Perhaps the Hour is near.
And what may make you perceive? Perhaps the Hour is near."
Say, "None in the heavens and earth knows the unseen except Allah
The Hour has drawn near
People ask you concerning the Hour. Say," Knowledge of it is only with Allah.
Inform me about the Hour? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: The one asked about it is no more knowledgeable about it than the one asking
Of it, [from those] besides Allah, there is no remover.
Is He [not best] who responds to the desperate one when he calls upon Him and removes evil
The second meaning is that "revealer" means "knower," one who reveals it and makes it clear. In any case, no one can prevent the occurrence of the Hour if Allah wills, and no one has knowledge of when the Hour will be. Then Allah the Exalted said:
