The questioner : Was the Friday prayer not known in the days of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), because I heard in one of the sermons that the first to establish the prayer, meaning the Friday prayer, was the noble Companion Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr?
The Shaykh : The Friday prayer existed in the time of the Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). How could it not exist when Allah says in the Qur'an:[Al-Jumu'ah 62:9-11]?
How could it not exist in the time of the Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him), when the transmission of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) performance of it is mass-transmitted?
This is a matter in which no one doubts. It is true that Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) was the first to gather for the prayer in Madinah, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in Makkah. So the Friday prayer was made obligatory, and Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) prayed it with them before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah.
The Shaykh : The Friday prayer existed in the time of the Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). How could it not exist when Allah says in the Qur'an:
(9) O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew. (10) And when the prayer has been concluded, disperse within the land and seek from the bounty of Allah, and remember Allah often that you may succeed. (11) But when they saw a transaction or a diversion, [O Muhammad], they rushed to it and left you standing. Say, "What is with Allah is better than diversion and than a transaction, and Allah is the best of providers."
