Question:
We seek clarification regarding the noble verse in the saying of the Truth — Blessed and Exalted is He — in Surat al-Jumu'ah: I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan. (So when the prayer is completed, then disperse in the land and seek from the bounty of Allah, and remember Allah much, so that you may succeed. And when they see trade or amusement, they disperse toward it and leave you standing. Say: What is with Allah is better than amusement and than trade. And Allah is the best of providers.)
Answer:
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. In these verses from the end of Surat al-Jumu'ah, Allah — Glorified and Exalted is He — prohibited selling after the adhan of Jumu'ah, which is the adhan that comes before the imam when he ascends the minbar. He prohibited buying and selling at this time and commanded turning toward the Jumu'ah prayer. He said — Glorified is He: (O you who believe! When the call is made for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah, then hasten to the remembrance of Allah), hasten to the remembrance of Allah, meaning attend to hear the khutbah. The intended meaning of the remembrance of Allah here is the Jumu'ah khutbah. (And leave off the sale): leave off the selling that occupies you from going to the remembrance of Allah. That, meaning if you do what I commanded you, which is leaving off selling at this hour and turning toward the Jumu'ah khutbah, (That is better for you): better for you than remaining in selling and being occupied with the matters of this world. (If you know): if you know the consequences of things and where they lead, then that is better for you with Allah — Glorified and Exalted is He — because the work for the Hereafter is what remains, and the work for this world perishes and vanishes. (So when the prayer is completed), when it is finished by the imam's taslim from the Jumu'ah prayer: (Then hasten to the remembrance of Allah), this is a command after a prohibition, which indicates permissibility, as the scholars of usul al-fiqh say, that a command, when it comes after a prohibition, is a command of permissibility. (And leave off the sale), (So when the prayer is completed, then disperse in the land), seek your provision, disperse in the land, and seek from the bounty of Allah through buying and selling, and the works that have worldly benefit for you. (So when the prayer is completed, then disperse in the land and seek from the bounty of Allah, and remember Allah much), so the person remembers Allah constantly in all his states, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did: he remembered Allah in all his states. So the Muslim remembers Allah while he is selling and buying, and while he is doing the works of this world, and he does not forget the remembrance of Allah — Glorified and Exalted is He — and become occupied with the world to the neglect of the remembrance of Allah. (And remember Allah much), and not a little remembrance. (So that you may succeed): meaning the hope that if you do that, remember Allah much, you will succeed with Allah, attain success with Allah — Glorified and Exalted is He — and success is the opposite of destruction and loss.
