The questioner : Some of the elderly in our village perform a prayer after the sun rises in the morning and call it: the Sunrise Prayer. Is there any authentic report regarding this? May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : This is the Dhuha prayer, which was reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and about which he (may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him) said:
Sadaqa is due on every joint of a person, every day the sun rises. يصبح على كل سلامى من الناس صدقة كل يوم تطلع فيه الشمس
Sahih Muslim 1009
Then he said:
And two rak'ahs that a person prays in the Dhuha time suffice for that, or are sufficient for that. ويغني من ذلك أو عن ذلك ركعتان يركعهما من الضحى
So the two rak'ahs in the Dhuha time are a recommended practice (sunnah), whether a person prays them after the sun has risen by the length of a spear, or at the time of the sun’s zenith before the prohibited time, or in between. All of this is called the Dhuha prayer. However, if you pray it at the beginning of the time, it is generally called the Sunrise Prayer, because you are praying it immediately after the sunrise, after the prohibited time has passed. And if you call it the Dhuha prayer, that is correct, because the time for Dhuha begins when the sun has risen by the length of a spear.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
