What is meant by the term "nationalism"?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : What do you mean by "nationalism"?

The Shaykh : By my use of the term "nationalism," I mean fighting solely for one's own tribe. For example, fighting because one is a Senegalese, fighting because one is a Najdi, fighting because one is a Hijazi, fighting because one is an Arab, and so on.

The questioner : Shaykh, for example, a Najdi man is approached by another tribe that wants to aggress against him, so he fights them, even though both groups are Muslims.

The Shaykh : This is different. Fighting between Muslims is a separate matter.

The questioner : No, but he is fighting those who want to aggress against him.

The Shaykh : No, self-defense is a separate matter. Self-defense is what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded, that a person should defend himself. He was asked: "If someone comes and says, 'Give me your money,' what should I do?" He said:
Do not give it to him لا تعطه
He said: "What if he fights me?" He said:
Fight him قاتله
He said: "What if he kills me?" He said:
Then you are a martyr فأنت شهيد
He said: "What if I kill him?" He said:
He is in the Fire هو في النار
