Explanation of the Book of Foods-10a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Mu'adh ibn Fadhalah narrated to us, Hisham narrated to us from Yahya from Ba'jah al-Juhani from 'Uqbah ibn 'Amir al-Juhani, who said:
that the Prophet (ﷺ) distributed among his companions some animals for sacrifice (to be slaughtered on `Id-al-Adha). `Uqba's share was a Jadha'a (a six month old goat). `Uqba said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! I get in my share of Jadha'a (a six month old ram)." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Slaughter it as a sacrifice." قسم النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بين أصحابه ضحايا فصارت لعقبة جذعة فقلت يا رسول الله صارت لي جذعة قال : ضح بها
Sahih al-Bukhari 5547
.

The Shaykh : Now, regarding his statement:
A one-year-old goat جذعة
, the scholars understood this to mean a one-year-old sheep, because a one-year-old sheep is sufficient for sacrifice, based on the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in what Muslim narrated from Jabir:
Do not slaughter except a mature animal, unless it is difficult for you, then slaughter a one-year-old from the sheep. لا تذبحوا إلا مسنة إلا أن تعسر عليكم فتذبحوا جذعة من الضأن
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 17:117
. They stated that the one-year-old referred to here is a one-year-old sheep, because a one-year-old goat is not sufficient.
