The reciter: It was narrated to us by Sadaqah, who said: Yahya ibn Sa'id informed us, from 'Ubayd Allah, who said: Nafi' informed me, from 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar, who said: لما توفي عبد الله بن أبي، جاء ابنه إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلّم فقال: يا رسول الله، أعطني قميصك أكفنه فيه وصل عليه، واستغفر له. فأعطاه قميصه، وقال له: إذا فرغت منه فآذنا فلما فرغ ءاذنه به، فجاء ليصلي عليه، فجذبه عمر فقال: أليس قد نهاك الله أن تصلي على المنافقين، فقال: استَغفِر لَهُم أَو لا تَستَغفِر لَهُم إِن تَستَغفِر لَهُم سَبعينَ مَرَّةً فَلَن يَغفِرَ اللَّهُ لَهُم ، فنزلت: وَلا تُصَلِّ عَلى أَحَدٍ مِنهُم ماتَ أَبَدًا وَلا تَقُم عَلى قَبرِهِ فترك الصلاة عليهم When 'Abdullah ibn Abi died, his son came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, give me your shirt so I can shroud him in it, and pray for him and seek forgiveness for him. So he gave him his shirt and said to him: When you are done with it, let us know. When he was done, he informed him of it, so he came to pray over him, but 'Umar pulled him and said: Has not Allah forbidden you to pray over the hypocrites? He said: "Should you seek forgiveness for them or not seek forgiveness for them? Even if you seek forgiveness for them seventy times, Allah will not forgive them." Then it was revealed: "And do not offer prayer over any one of them when he dies, ever, and do not stand at his grave." So he left off praying over them..
