The questioner : I work as a shepherd, and sometimes the cold is very severe, so I pray some of the prayers outside their times, such as combining the midday prayer with the afternoon prayer, and the sunset prayer with the night prayer. Please guide us, may Allah reward you with good?
The Shaykh : There is no blame on you for praying by combining; you may combine the midday prayer with the afternoon prayer, and the sunset prayer with the night prayer, if praying each prayer in its own time causes hardship for you. This is based on the statement of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him both): They asked: What was his intention in doing that? Meaning, what was the reason he did this? He said: "He intended not to cause hardship for his Ummah". From this hadith, it is understood that whenever there is hardship for a person, it is permissible to combine the midday and afternoon prayers, or the sunset and night prayers, for that reason.
If the cold is severe and it is difficult for you, O shepherds, to perform the ablution for each prayer, then combine the midday and afternoon prayers, either by advancing the first or delaying the second, whichever is easier, and combine the sunset and night prayers, either by advancing the first or delaying the second, whichever is easier. There is no blame on you in this; rather, this is what Allah (Mighty and Majestic) loves, because of His generosity and bounty, He loves that His servants should avail themselves of the dispensations He has granted them.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) combined the midday and afternoon prayers, and the sunset and night prayers, in Madinah, without fear or rain.
