We said that silence in a place where it is not appropriate is a form of rudeness. If someone says, “I want to leave safely, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘And you will not cease to be in good as long as you remain silent,’” and therefore I leave safely and do not speak, is this rudeness?

The questioner : Yesterday we said that silence in a place where it is not appropriate is a form of rudeness. If someone says, “I want to leave safely, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
And you will not cease to be in good as long as you remain silent وإنك لن تزال بخير ما سكت
or
You will not cease to be safe as long as you remain silent إنك لا تزال سالماً ما سكت
and therefore I leave safely and do not speak, is this rudeness?”

The Shaykh : One is not safe if it is a form of rudeness.

The questioner : How, O Shaykh? If wisdom dictates that one should speak, then one may not leave safely, because safety is not achieved by silence in all circumstances. Safety may lie in speaking. For this reason, if one remains silent regarding enjoining good and forbidding evil, one does not become safe. Likewise, if one remains silent in a way that the people present consider to be rudeness, one may not be safe, because bringing joy to a Muslim, encouraging him, and making things easy for him are among the things that are required.

The questioner : If he leaves it?

The Shaykh : If he leaves it, it is always rudeness. If he leaves it, it is undoubtedly rudeness. That is, he comes and sits with him for half an hour or an hour without speaking, saying this...

The questioner : If others speak, does that mean he should remain silent?

The Shaykh : Yes, if others speak and that suffices, there is no harm.
