Among us, between the tribes, each tribe has a known brand that they place on the face of the sheep or the camel so that they can be identified. What is the ruling on that?

The questioner : Among us, between the tribes, each tribe has a known brand that they place on the sheep or the camel, and this brand is on the face so that each individual can identify his livestock by this brand. What is the ruling, O honorable Shaykh, on placing this brand on the ears, where these sheep mix with other flocks? Please guide us on this matter.

The Shaykh : This brand, or branding, has been used by people since ancient times to distinguish a person's livestock from the livestock of others. It is permissible and established by the authentic Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
However, it is not permissible to brand the face. As for branding the ear, there is nothing wrong with it, because the ear is not part of the face but rather part of the head. Likewise, if it is on the neck, the upper arm, the thigh, or any part of the livestock's body, it is permissible. But, as we mentioned, the face is an exception, for it is not permissible to brand it.
