Explanation of the Book of Foods-09b

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Abu al-Walid narrated to us, Shu'bah narrated to us from Hisham ibn Zayd from Anas, who said:
I entered upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with my brother to have his teeth rubbed with a date, and he was in his drying platform, and I saw him branding a sheep, I think he said, on its ears. دخلت على النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بأخ لي يحنكه وهو في مربد له فرأيته يسم شاةً حسبته قال في آذانها
.

The Shaykh : Branding is permissible, even though it involves some torture and pain for the animal, because there is a benefit for humans. Branding is in the position of writing; if you wrote "this belongs to so-and-so," branding would suffice for that. Indeed, every tribe, or rather every clan within a tribe, has a specific brand unique to them, to the extent that if camels are lost and remain for a period, people recognize them as belonging to the family of so-and-so because of the brand. Therefore, branding is undoubtedly very important, and that is why the Lawgiver permitted it, even though it is torture by fire.
