Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted, "And the sky with the constellations," to His saying, "And they are witnesses to what they do to the believers."

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : We stopped at the surah, Surat al-Buruj:
Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, said: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
(1) By the sky containing great stars (2) And [by] the promised Dayوَالسَّمَاءِ ذَاتِ الْبُرُوجِ * وَالْيَوْمِ الْمَوْعُودِ
[Al-Buruj 85:1-2]
.
The Basmala is a distinct verse in the Noble Book; it is not part of the surah before it nor of the surah after it. It is placed at the beginning of every surah except Surat al-Bara'ah, for the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) did not write it in that surah, so it remained without a Basmala.
What is widespread among the common people that the jinn snatched the Basmala of Surat al-Bara'ah is undoubtedly false, because Allah says:
Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian.
[Al-Hijr 15:9]
, and it is not possible for Shayatins or jinn to be unleashed upon it so that they snatch from it. Rather, Allah the Exalted protected it when it was revealed and protected it after its revelation. What is mentioned from some scholars that the Basmala was not mentioned in it because it was revealed with the sword, containing the command to fight the mushriks, is also incorrect, because the Basmala is a blessing, and jihad in the path of Allah is among the greatest things in which blessing is sought.
In any case, it is a distinct verse at the beginning of every surah except Surat al-Bara'ah, and it is not part of al-Fatihah according to the stronger opinion indicated by the Qudsi hadith, which is His saying, the Exalted, as narrated by His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) that He said: قسمت الصلاة بيني وبين عبدي نصفين فإذا قال : الحمد لله رب العالمين قال : حمدني عبدي I divided the prayer between Me and My servant into two halves, and when he says: "All praise is to Allah, Lord of the worlds," He says: "My servant praised Me" to the end of the hadith. This indicates that the Basmala is not part of al-Fatihah. Likewise, the first thing revealed to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) was Surat Iqra; Jibril recited it to him, and it did not contain "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful." This indicates that it is not part of the surah.
His saying, the Exalted:
By the sky containing great stars
[Al-Buruj 85:1]
. This "waw" is a letter of oath, meaning: Allah the Exalted swears by the sky with the constellations, i.e., the possessor of the constellations. Al-Buruj is the plural of burj, and it is the great cluster of stars. It is called buruj because of its height, elevation, prominence, and clarity.
The constellations, according to astronomers, are twelve, gathered in the saying of the poet:
"Aries, then Taurus, then Gemini, then Cancer *** then Leo, Virgo, then Libra
then Scorpio, Sagittarius, then Capricorn, and likewise *** Aquarius, and the last of them is Pisces"
.
So they are twelve constellations: three for spring, three for summer, three for autumn, and three for winter.
So Allah the Exalted swears by the sky with the constellations. It is permissible for Him, the Exalted, to swear by whatever He wills of His creation. As for us, we do not swear except by Allah with His names and attributes, and we do not swear by anything of the created things, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family):
Whoever has to take an oath should swear by Allah or remain silent.
Sahih al-Bukhari 2679
, and his saying:
He who swears by anyone or anything other than Allah, has indeed committed an act of Kufr or Shirk
Riyad as-Salihin 1711
.
By the sky containing great stars
[Al-Buruj 85:1]
: So "with the constellations" means the possessor of the constellations, which is the great cluster of stars, and in the sky there are twelve constellations.
And the promised day وَالْيَوْمِ الْمَوْعُودِ
. The promised day is the Day of Resurrection. Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, promised it and explained it in His Book, and He established rational proofs indicating that it will certainly occur, as He, the Exalted, said:
As We began the first creation, We will repeat it. [That is] a promise binding upon Us. Indeed, We will do it.
[Al-Anbya 21:104]
.
And a witness and a witnessed thing
. The scholars of tafsir mentioned several opinions regarding the meaning of "witness" and "witnessed," which are summarized by:
That Allah swore by every witness and every witnessed. The witnesses are many: among them is Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), as a witness over us; among them are we, this Ummah, as witnesses over the people; among them are the limbs of a person, which testify against him on the Day of Resurrection regarding what he did of good and evil; and among them are the angels, who testify on the Day of Resurrection. So everyone who testifies to the truth is included in His saying:
And a witness
.
As for the witnessed, it is the Day of Resurrection and the great terrors that occur in it, as He, the Exalted, said:
That is a Day for which the people will be collected, and that is a Day [which will be] witnessed.
[Hud 11:103]
. So Allah swore by every witness and every witnessed.
Destroyed are the companions
Yes, we read it, we read it and explained it. What is the promised day?
The Day of Resurrection.
Cursed were the companions of the trench
[Al-Buruj 85:4]
Destroyed
Meaning: He destroyed them. It was said that "killing" here means cursing, which is expulsion and distancing from the mercy of Allah.
The people of the trench are a group of disbelievers who burned the believers with fire. Multiple stories have been reported about these people, some in Sham and some in Yemen. The point is that these disbelievers tried to make the believers apostatize from their religion, but they failed. So they dug a trench, which is a long excavation in the ground like a river, and they gathered a lot of firewood and burned the believers with it, refuge with Allah. For this reason, He said:
[Containing] the fire full of fuel,
[Al-Buruj 85:5]
Meaning: The trench is the trench of fire.
With its fuel
Meaning: The great, blazing firewood.
When they were sitting near it
[Al-Buruj 85:6]
Meaning: Those who dug the trenches and threw the believers into them had, refuge with Allah, harshness and tyranny. They saw the fire devouring these humans while they were sitting on thrones, laughing, as if nothing had happened, refuge with Allah. This is part of tyranny: for a person to see humans being devoured by fire while he is sitting on his bed, joking and not caring.
And they, to what they were doing against the believers, were witnesses.
[Al-Buruj 85:7]
Meaning: They are witnesses to what they do to the believers, i.e., they are present and nothing of what they did to the believers is hidden from them. Therefore, they deserved this threat, indeed they deserved this punishment: that Allah destroyed them, cursed them, expelled them, and distanced them from His mercy.
Then He said, Mighty and Majestic:
And they resented them not except because they believed in Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy,
[Al-Buruj 85:8]
. We will postpone speaking about this until the next meeting so that we can allocate a lot of time to answering questions. We will start from the right, and the question is one for each person so that everyone gets their share. If you have several questions, the most important one will be taken.
Special, then later, i.e.

The questioner : Later.

The Shaykh : Pray the Dhuhr with us, and we are coming, if Allah wills, we will answer it for you.
