A man residing in al-Qassim who visits his family in Riyadh: is he considered a traveler there?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : O Shaykh: I am a person whose permanent residence is in al-Qassim, and I sometimes go to Riyadh to visit my family. I have, for example, a room there, and I stay with them for two or three days. Do I have the right to shorten the prayer if I pray alone? And is my ruling the same as that of a traveler?

The Shaykh : Yes, your ruling is that of a traveler, because your home is in al-Qassim, and your visit to your family is the visit of a traveler. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) shortened the prayer in Makkah, and he was originally a resident there, having houses in it. But when he migrated, his home became al-Madinah. So when you go to your family, you are a traveler. However, it is obligatory for you to pray with the congregation as long as you have heard the adhan and know the location of the mosque. If you miss the prayer, you may shorten it. Likewise, if you are wearing socks, you may wipe over them for three days. And likewise, if you are in Ramadan, you may break your fast.

The questioner : Peace be upon you. A man, O Shaykh, has two wives.

The Shaykh : We have mentioned that the greeting is not prescribed, because the Companions used to ask the Messenger of Allah without greeting him.
