Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: "Does he think that no one will overpower him?" to His saying: "So he did not scale the steep path," from Surat al-Balad.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And their Companions, and those who followed them with excellence, until the Day of Judgment.
As for what follows: This is Thursday, the eighteenth of the month of Rabi' al-Awwal, in which the meeting with the brothers is completed every week.
This is the seventieth meeting, and it takes place in the month of Rabi' al-Awwal of the year 1415.
It is our custom to first speak about the exegesis of verses we have been with, from Surat al-Naba' until we reached the beginning of Surat al-Balad in the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He: in the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He:
(4) We have certainly created man into hardship. (5) Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? (6) He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance." (7) Does he think that no one has seen him?
[Al-Balad 90:4-7]
, and we explained that the saying of Allah the Exalted:
We have certainly created man into hardship.
[Al-Balad 90:4]
has two meanings according to the scholars:
The first meaning: al-kabd means: completeness and elevation in creation, intellect, and so on.
And the second meaning: enduring hardships in worldly and hereafter deeds.
The rule in the exegesis of the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, O our brothers, the rule is: if a verse can be understood in two meanings and there is no contradiction between them, then it is to be understood as both meanings, because that is broader in exegesis and knowledge...
Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said:
Does he think that never will anyone overcome him?
[Al-Balad 90:5]
meaning: that the human being, in his self and his strength, thinks that no one will overpower him, because he is in the prime of his youth, his strength, his arrogance, and his haughtiness, so he says: no one can overpower me, I do what I wish. And from this is the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He:
As for 'Aad, they were arrogant upon the earth without right and said, "Who is greater than us in strength? فَأَمَّا عَادٌ فَاسْتَكْبَرُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ بِغَيْرِ الْحَقِّ وَقَالُوا مَنْ أَشَدُّ مِنَّا قُوَّةً
[Fussilat 41:15]
Allah the Exalted said:
Did they not consider that Allah who created them was greater than them in strength?
[Fussilat 41:15]
.
So the human being, in his state of health and the prime of his youth, thinks that no one can overpower him, and this is undoubtedly the case for the disbeliever, who even thinks that the Lord, Mighty and Majestic, cannot overpower him.
As for the believer, he knows that Allah is able to overpower him, and that He is Able over all things, so he fears Allah.
He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance."
[Al-Balad 90:6]

Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said:
Does he think that no one has seen him?
[Al-Balad 90:7]
And all of this is a warning to the human being not to be arrogant, and not to be proud because of his physical strength, or the abundance of his wealth.
Allah the Exalted said:
(8) Have We not made for him two eyes? (9) And a tongue and two lips? (10) And have shown him the two ways?
[Al-Balad 90:8-10]
These are three blessings from the greatest blessings upon the human being.
Have We not made for him two eyes?
[Al-Balad 90:8]
meaning: he sees with them, and perceives through them, and these two eyes convey to the heart what the human being looks at. If he looks with a forbidden glance, he is sinful; if he looks with a glance that brings him closer to Allah, he is a gainer; and if he looks at what is permissible for him, he is neither praised nor blamed, as long as this glance does not lead to a religious prohibition, in which case he would be sinful with this glance.
And a tongue and two lips?
: A tongue with which he speaks, and lips with which he controls speech, and this is from the great blessings of Allah, because with this tongue and these lips he is able to express what is in his self, and without this he would not be able to. If he did not speak, how would he convey what is in his heart? How would he teach people what is in his self? Except by a gesture that tires the one gesturing and the one to whom the gesture is made. But from the blessing of Allah is that He made for him a speaking tongue, and lips with which he controls speech, and this is from the blessing of Allah, and it is also from the wonders of His power. Where does speech come from? From air that comes from the lungs and exits from specific points. If it passes through something, it becomes a letter, and if it passes through something else, it becomes another letter, and it is one air, from one point, but it passes through fine hairs in the throat and in the lips and in the gums. These fine hairs form the letters. So you find, for example, the letter baa and the letter sheen, all from air that is expelled from the lungs, and yet they differ according to what they pass through in this mouth and the known points of articulation. This is from the perfection of the power of Allah, Mighty and Majestic.
He said:
And We guided him to the two paths
We guided him, meaning: We made clear for him the path of good and the path of evil. This is one opinion.
And the second opinion:
And We guided him to the two paths
We directed him to that by which he is nourished, which are the two breasts, for they are two peaks due to their elevation above the chest. So Allah the Exalted guided him while he was an infant who did not know, from the moment he was born and his mother placed him, he seeks the breast. Who taught him? Allah, Mighty and Majestic.
So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, made clear the end for this human being, from the moment he is born, he finds his way to the two peaks.
And in his mother's womb, he is nourished through the navel, because he is not able to be nourished otherwise. If he were nourished through the mouth, he would need to urinate and defecate. How is that? But through the navel, blood comes to him from his mother's blood, and it spreads in his veins until he lives until Allah the Exalted permits his exit.
Then Allah the Exalted said:
But he has not broken through the difficult pass.
[Al-Balad 90:11]
, and we now leave the space for questions, because the questions may be more beneficial, and we will continue, if Allah wills, in the future with what we are doing of exegesis of the speech of Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He. So we begin first with the right side, and it is preferable for those who are not from this town, because they came from a distance, so they are more deserving of being given priority.
