The questioner : He asks: What is the fate of the Muslim who fasts, prays, and pays zakah, but believes in the awliya (close friends of Allah) who are called in some Islamic countries with a good belief that they cause harm and benefit, and as he makes du'a' (supplication) to this wali (close friend of Allah), saying, "O so-and-so, for you is such and such, if my son or daughter is healed, or by Allah, O so-and-so," such are these words. What is the ruling on that, and what is the fate of the Muslim in this?

The Shaykh : Calling this man who looks to graves and awliya (close friends of Allah) and calls upon them a Muslim is ignorance on the part of the one who names him. In reality, this is not a Muslim because he is a mushrik (one who associates partners with Allah). Allah the Exalted said:
And your Lord says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible. وقال ربكم ادعوني أستجب لكم إن الذين يستكبرون عن عبادتي سيدخلون جهنم داخرين
[Ghafir 40:60]
So du'a' (supplication) is not permissible except for Allah alone; He is the One who removes distress, and He is the One who brings benefit.
Is He [not best] who responds to the desperate one when he calls upon Him and removes evil and makes you inheritors of the earth? Is there a deity with Allah? Little do you remember. أمن يجيب المضطر إذا دعاه ويكشف السوء ويجعلكم خلفاء الأرض أإله مع الله قليلاً ما تذكرون
[An-Naml 27:62]
So even if he prays, fasts, and pays zakah, while he calls upon other than Allah, worships Him, and looks to Him, he is a mushrik (one who associates partners with Allah). Allah has forbidden Paradise for him, and his abode is the Fire, and there are no helpers for the wrongdoers.

The questioner : We seek refuge in Allah...

The Shaykh : We ask Allah for well-being.

The questioner : This message came from the sender Abdullah from al-Ta'if, in which he says.
