Supplicating to other than Allah among the awliya (close friends of Allah) and the righteous to remove hardship, and claiming knowledge of the unseen

The fourth question of Fatwa No. ( 5476 ):
Q4: We have a man here who is called Salih or is among the righteous, and he is
alive on the face of the earth, and the people honor him to the utmost degree. Every year, or upon the completion of a lunar year, they hold a feast specifically for him, attended by men from all the tribes. A man comes to him and says, “My master, so-and-so, your dinner is at my place for the sake of seeking blessing,” and another says, “My master, so-and-so, your breakfast is at my place.” As for the feast, it consists of one or two slaughtered animals, and about 50 or 60 men are gathered for the feast on the same night or day. Dhikr (remembrance of Allah) is recited if the feast is at night. The result is that the cost of the feast to the host is about 100 pounds. After the wali (close friend of Allah) leaves, the host follows him and gives him no less than 50 or 20 pounds. This happens every year among the wealthy people. He knows from the unseen what a person intends in his heart or seeks through his status with Allah. Here is an example: when a man who believes in his heart that he is a righteous person comes in a state of distress, he says, “My master, so-and-so, by your blessing and your status with Allah, remove a distress from my many worldly distresses, such as an illness, or fear on a road, or in the darkness of the night, and so on.” And he says to him after the supplication, “I will give you five pounds, my master so-and-so, if you cure my illness or remove my fear of any kind.” This is all in the unseen. After the righteous man met him, he said to him, “Take a pound.” The distressed man was surprised by this matter, and this is all in
the unseen. Does this matter indicate the blessing of the righteous man’s work in the aforementioned man? Or is it the work of fortune-tellers from the unseen, which is prohibited? We also want from you an explanation of this matter, whether it indicates righteousness or is prohibited.

A4: First: Supplicating to other than Allah among the awliya (close friends of Allah) and the righteous to remove hardship, or to cure a sick person, or to secure a frightening road is major shirk (associating partners with Allah) that takes one out of Islam. Allah the Exalted said:
And [He revealed] that the masjids are for Allah, so do not invoke with Allah anyone.وَأَنَّ الْمَسَاجِدَ لِلَّهِ فَلا تَدْعُوا مَعَ اللَّهِ أَحَدًا
[Al-Jinn 72:18]
, and Allah the Exalted said:
And do not invoke besides Allah that which neither benefits you nor harms you, for if you did, then indeed you would be of the wrongdoers.'"وَلاَ تَدْعُ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ مَا لاَ يَنْفَعُكَ وَلاَ يَضُرُّكَ فَإِنْ فَعَلْتَ فَإِنَّكَ إِذًا مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ
[Yunus 10:106]
. Second: Claiming knowledge of the unseen is kufr (disbelief). Allah the Exalted said:
Say, "None in the heavens and earth knows the unseen except Allahقُلْ لاَ يَعْلَمُ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ الْغَيْبَ إِلا اللَّهُ
[An-Naml 27:65]
. Third: As for slaughtering for other than Allah with the intention of seeking the blessing of this wali (close friend of Allah), this is not permissible, and its doer is cursed; for it is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Allah cursed him who sacrificed for anyone besides Allahلعن الله من ذبح لغير الله
Sahih Muslim 1978b
, and Allah the Exalted said:
(162) Say, "Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds. (163) No partner has He. And this I have been commanded, and I am the first [among you] of the Muslims."
[Al-An'am 6:162-163]
, and if
the slaughter is with the intention of honoring the brothers, feeding them, and doing good, then there is nothing wrong with it. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
