The reciter: Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah and Ishaq ibn Ibrahim both narrated from Jarir. Uthman said: Jarir narrated to us from Husayn ibn 'Abd al-Rahman from Salim ibn Abi al-Ja'd from Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah: That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the sermon standing on Friday when a caravan from Syria arrived. The people turned away toward it until only twelve men remained. Then this verse in the chapter of al-Jumu'ah was revealed: "And when they see trade or amusement, they disperse toward it and leave you standing."
