The Book of Jumu'ah, the Two Festivals, the Prayer for Rain, the Eclipse Prayer, and Funerals-02a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: And Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah and Ibn Numayr narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Bashir narrated to us, saying: Zakariyya narrated to us, saying: Sammak ibn Harb narrated to me from Jabir ibn Samurah, who said:
I used to observe prayer with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and his prayer was of moderate length and his sermon too was of moderate length. كنت أصلي مع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم الصلوات فكانت صلاته قصداً وخطبته قصداً
Sahih Muslim 866b
And in Abu Bakr’s narration, it is Zakariyya from Sammak.

The Shaykh : "Moderate" means: neither long nor short; this is the meaning of moderation. So his prayer was moderate and his sermon was moderate. And when we look at what he used to recite in the Friday prayer, that he sometimes recited Surat al-Jumu'ah and Surat al-Munafiqun, we understand the meaning of moderation, and that it is not as some people think, that he recites from the short surahs of the final part of the Qur'an. Likewise, in the sermon, when we know that he sometimes preached with the surah "Qaf", we understand the meaning of moderation. It is not that he recites two or three lines and then descends. There must be a sermon that moves the hearts and achieves benefit. Then, circumstances differ; the situation may require lengthening the sermon, and times may require lengthening the sermon. A person should preach a sermon such that people say: "I wish he had continued," and not say: "He prolonged it and bored us." And a person knows from himself the acceptance of people for his sermon and speech, and the lack of acceptance thereof.
