The Reciter: Chapter on the Saba and Dabur winds
And Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us, and Ghundar narrated to us from Shu'bah. And Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna and Ibn Bashshar said: Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us, and Shu'bah narrated to us from al-Hakam from Mujahid from Ibn Abbas from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
I have been helped by the east wind and the 'Ad were destroyed by the west wind. نُصِرْتُ بِالصَّبَا، وَأُهْلِكَتْ عَادٌ بِالدَّبُورِ
Sahih Muslim 900a

The Shaykh : This is also among the blessed winds. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was supported by the Saba, which is the north-eastern wind, and that was on the Day of the Confederates, as Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) said:
We sent upon them a wind and armies [of angels] you did not seeأرسلنا عليهم ريحاً وجنوداً لم تروها
[Al-Ahzab 33:9]
This north-eastern wind is a cold, piercing wind. Allah (Mighty and Majestic) sent it upon the Confederates who had banded together against the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). They were about ten thousand fighters and besieged the city, as is well known. Allah sent this wind upon them, which disturbed their sleep, until Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) saw Abu Sufyan warming himself by the fire, and he was the leader of his people, warming himself by the fire. He said: If I wished, I would have hit him with my arrow, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had instructed him and said:
Do not do anythingلا تُحدث شيئاً
. And Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said in this cold wind: It is as if I am in a bath, with calm and warmth. When he returned to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), the cold affected him. He came while the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was praying, so he added part of his cloak to him, and Hudhayfah lay down in order to sleep. This wind was severe; it tore down the tents and scattered the camels, and none of them remained who wanted to stay, until they withdrew, praise be to Allah.
And sufficient was Allah for the believers in battle, and ever is Allah Powerful and Exalted in Might.وكفى الله المؤمنين القتال، وكان الله قويّاً عزيزا
[Al-Ahzab 33:25]
The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was supported by this.
The people of Hud were destroyed by the Dabur: The Dabur is the opposite of the Qabul, meaning the opposite of the Saba, and it is the south-western wind. This is usually severe. Aad was destroyed by this wind, which struck them from behind and destroyed them, as Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said:
Destroying everything by command of its Lord. And they became so that nothing was seen [of them] except their dwellingsتدمّر كلَّ شيءٍ بإذن ربّها فأصبحوا لا يُرى إلا مساكنهم
[Al-Ahqaf 46:25]
. For this reason, some scholars stated that the Saba is the north and the Dabur is the south, and some said: the Saba is the east and the Dabur is the west, and the combined view is that the Dabur is between the west and the south, and the Saba is between the east and the north. In this is evidence that the winds are subjugated by the permission of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) to support His awliya (close friends of Allah) and to destroy His enemies, because everything is by the command of Allah, everything is by the command of Allah. Allah has subjugated everything by His command, to make it a punishment and to make it a mercy.
