Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us, Shu'bah narrated to us, saying: I heard Qatadah narrating from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib from Ibn 'Umar from 'Umar from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:
The dead is punished in the grave because of wailing on it. الْمَيِّتُ يُعَذَّبُ فِي قَبْرِهِ بِمَا نِيحَ عَلَيْهِ
Sahih Muslim 927b

The Shaykh : Wailing is more specific than crying, because crying may occur by natural instinct, without intention, and a person cannot prevent it. As for wailing, it occurs by choice; it is when a person raises his voice in crying until it resembles the cooing of a pigeon. This is more severe than the former because one intentionally seeks and desires the crying, and it indicates a type of dissatisfaction with the divine decree and destiny of Allah. Therefore, wailing is among the major sins. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the wailer and the listener, and said:
If the wailing woman does not repent before she dies, she will be made to stand on the Day of Resurrection wearing a garment of pitch and a chemise of mange. النائحة إذا لم تتُب قبل موتها تُقام يوم القيامة وعليها سِربالٍ من قَطران، ودرعٌ من جَرَب
Sahih Muslim 934
