The reciter: Yahya ibn Ayyub, Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah, and 'Amr al-Naqid all narrated to us from Ibn 'Ulayyah. Abu Bakr said: Isma'il ibn 'Ulayyah narrated to us from Khalid from Hafsah from Umm 'Atiyyah that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them regarding the washing of his daughter:
Start from the right side beginning with those parts which are washed in ablution. ابْدَأْنَ بِمَيَامِنِهَا، وَمَوَاضِعِ الْوُضُوءِ مِنْهَا
Sahih al-Bukhari 167
.

The Shaykh : Washing the deceased is a collective obligation (fard kifayah). The evidence for this is: Yes, Jamal? The hadith of the man whose mount gored him during Hajj, where he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Wash him with water and suds. Yes, this is evidence that it is an obligation, a collective obligation.
Its method: The scholars said that the deceased is placed on the washing bed, on his back. Then he is cleaned, meaning his private parts are washed, but it is obligatory to place a cloth over them so that his 'awrah (nakedness) is not exposed. Then the washer takes a cloth for his hand in order to wipe the two private parts, rubbing them if there is any impurity in them. After that, he performs ablution for him, washing his face and hands, wiping his head, and washing his feet. Then they said, may Allah have mercy on them, regarding rinsing the mouth and sniffing water into the nose: water is not put into his mouth or nose, because the water might seep into his stomach, and there is nothing to hold the water in, so it might come out from his rear. Therefore, he takes the cloth, wets it with water, and cleans his teeth and nostrils with it. After this, he washes his head three times, but he washes it with suds from the suds of the suds (sadr). He washes the rest of the body with the residue of the suds (thifl), three times, or five, or seven, or more than that, and it should be an odd number.
For a woman, it is added to her washing that her hair is tied into three bunches: the forelock, meaning the middle of the head, and the two side bunches, meaning the right and left, and they are placed behind her. They said that after he washes her private parts, he should raise her head slightly and squeeze her abdomen to expel whatever is ready to come out of impurity. The washing is finished. They said that in this state, she should be dried before being shrouded, which is the opposite of the washing of the living. For the washing of the living, drying is not recommended, but it is not disliked; if he wishes, he dries himself, and if he wishes, he does not. As for the deceased, they said that it is better that he be dried. And as you heard: that camphor is placed in the last washing, because camphor has a pleasant smell, it tightens the body, and it drives away insects from the body. And with this, the washing is finished.
