The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted, in the context of the hadiths in the chapter on the recommendation of giving precedence to the right in everything that involves honor: "From Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them regarding the washing of his daughter Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her):
Start from the right side beginning with those parts which are washed in ablution. ابدأن بميامنها ومواضع الوضوء منها
Sahih al-Bukhari 167
Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. And from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When one of you puts on sandals he should put on the right one first and when he takes them off he should take off the left one first, so that the right one should be the first to be put on and the last to be taken off. إذا انتعل أحدكم فليبدأ باليمنى وإذا نزع فليبدأ بالشمال لتكن اليمنى أولهما تنعل وآخرهما تنزع
Mishkat al-Masabih 4410
Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. And from Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to use his right hand for his food, drink, and clothing, and his left hand for everything else. Narrated by Abu Dawud and others. And from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When you put on (a garment) and when you perform ablution, you should begin with your right side. إذا لبستم وإذا توضأتم فابدؤوا بأيامنكم
Sunan Abi Dawud 4141Sahih (Al-Albani)
This is an authentic hadith, narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi with an authentic chain. And from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Mina and went to the Jamarat (Pillars) and stoned them, then went to his lodging in Mina and slaughtered his sacrifice, then said to the barber:
Take خذ
He pointed to his right side, then his left side, then he began giving the hair to the people. Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. And in a narration: When he stoned the Jamarat, slaughtered his sacrifice, and shaved, he handed his right side to the barber to shave, then he called for Abu Talhah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) and gave it to him, then he handed him the left side and said:
Shave. احلق
He shaved it and gave it to Abu Talhah, who said:
Distribute it among the people. اقسمه بين الناس

These hadiths explain the recommendation of beginning with the right in matters that involve honor, and giving precedence to the left in matters that involve harm or filth, such as istinja' (cleaning oneself after relieving oneself) and istijmar (cleaning with stones) and the like. The author mentioned from Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), who was from the Ansar, among the women of the Ansar, and she had great deeds, including that she used to wash the female deceased. Zaynab, the daughter of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), passed away, so they gathered to wash her. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said to them:
Start from the right side beginning with those parts which are washed in ablution. ابدأن بميامنها ومواضع الوضوء منها
Sahih al-Bukhari 167
The method of washing the deceased is: first, remove his clothes after placing something over his 'awrah (private parts) to cover it. Then, the washer places a cloth on his hand and washes his private parts, meaning he washes his front and back until they are clean. Then, he removes this cloth and washes his hands as a person normally performs wudu'. Then, he takes a cloth wetted with water to clean his teeth and mouth, and cleans his nostrils instead of rinsing the mouth and sniffing water, and he does not put water in his mouth or nose, because if he did, the water would go down into his stomach and might come out, causing harm to those washing him. Then, he washes his face and his hands to the elbows, wipes his head, and washes his feet with a complete wudu'. Then, he washes his head with the lather of sidr (lotus tree), because he must have water in which ground sidr has been mixed; he beats it with his hands until it becomes lather, takes the lather, and washes the head with it. Then, he washes the rest of the body with the remaining sidr. A woman is not washed except by women; not even her father, son, or any of her mahrams (relatives one may not marry) washes her, except women or her husband. A man is not washed except by men; his mother, daughter, or any of the women do not wash him, except his wife. So the husband washes his wife, and the wife is washed by her husband. In all other cases, a male does not wash a female, nor a female wash a male. The women gathered to wash Zaynab, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
They began with her right side ابدأن بميامنها
Meaning, the right side before the left side, the right hand before the left hand, the right foot before the left foot, and the right side of the body before the left side, and the places of wudu' on her. So they did that and made her head into three parts, meaning three braids: the right side one braid, the left side one braid, and the middle of the head one braid, and they placed them behind her. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) gave them a hirqah, meaning a waistband, and said:
Place it against her أشعرنها إياه
Meaning, place it directly on her body, seeking blessing through the waistband of the Prophet (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him). So they did that. The point of this is his saying:
They began with her right side ابدأن بميامنها
Then the author mentioned hadiths containing the meaning of what preceded, such as the hadith of Abu Hurayrah regarding putting on clothing and sandals, as well as the hadith of Safiyyah and the second hadith of Abu Hurayrah.
