Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: And Yahya ibn Ayyub, and Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah, and Zuheir ibn Harb, and Ali ibn Hujr al-Sa'di, all of them narrated from Ibn Ulayyah, and the wording is that of Yahya. He said: Ibn Ulayyah narrated to us, and Abd al-Aziz ibn Sahib informed us from Anas ibn Malik, who said:
A funeral procession passed by and they spoke well of the deceased, so the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is decreed, it is decreed, it is decreed." And a funeral procession passed by and they spoke ill of the deceased, so the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is decreed, it is decreed, it is decreed." 'Umar said: May my father and mother be a ransom for you! A funeral procession passed by and they spoke well of the deceased, so you said: "It is decreed, it is decreed, it is decreed." And a funeral procession passed by and they spoke ill of the deceased, so you said: "It is decreed, it is decreed, it is decreed." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever you speak well of, Paradise is decreed for him, and whoever you speak ill of, the Fire is decreed for him. You are the witnesses of Allah on earth. You are the witnesses of Allah on earth. You are the witnesses of Allah on earth."

The Shaykh : This issue relates to creed, and it is: Do we testify for anyone regarding Paradise or the Fire? We say: Testifying for someone regarding Paradise or the Fire is of two types: testifying by description, and testifying by specific person. As for testifying by description, we testify that every believing, pious person is in Paradise; this is the testimony by description. And we testify that every disbelieving, wicked person is in the Fire.
Testifying by specific person is to say: So-and-so is in Paradise, so-and-so is in the Fire. The scholars of creed say: We do not testify except for those whom the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) specified, such as the ten, Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammās, Ukashah ibn Mihsan, and many others like them. And we do not testify regarding the Fire either, except for those for whom the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) testified, or who are mentioned in the Qur'an. We testify that Abu Lahab is in the Fire because it is mentioned in the Qur'an, and likewise for those for whom the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) testified. The scholars differed regarding those upon whom the Ummah agreed to speak well: do we testify for them or not?
The Shaykh of Islam (may Allah have mercy on him) holds that for those upon whom the Ummah agreed to speak well, we testify for them regarding Paradise, such as the four Imams, for example, and others for whom the Ummah agreed to speak well. He cited this hadith as evidence. However, most of those who wrote on creed did not mention except the first category, which is those for whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) specifically testified. The truth is that this is safer. Our testimony or lack thereof does not determine whether such a person is in Paradise or not. If we testify, does that prevent him from being among the people of Paradise? So there is no need for us to testify. As for those for whom the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) testified, we testify for them in confirmation of the news of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Otherwise, our testimony undoubtedly contains good, but their entry into Paradise does not depend on it. So safety is safer. Yes, we say: We hope that he is among the people of Paradise, and we fear that he is among the people of the Fire. There is nothing wrong with that. And there is a difference between hope and certainty. Certainty means you testify that this specific person is among the people of Paradise. If someone asks: What if the visions agreed, meaning that people of righteousness and goodness agreed in their dreams that so-and-so is in Paradise? Do we testify? It can be said that if there are indications pointing to the truth of the dream, we can testify, because when the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a group of Companions on the Night of Decree, he said:
I saw that your dreams agreed, so whoever among you is seeking it, let him seek it in the last ten nights.
In this is an indication that if dreams agree, they provide a ruling. It may also be said that this applies to the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), and the Companions have a status different from other people. Therefore, when they spoke well of a man, and the second time they spoke ill of him, he said: "It is decreed, it is decreed." So the testimony of the Companions is not like the testimony of other people, due to the prominence of their justice, trustworthiness, and fidelity.
