The Book of Friday Prayer, the Two Festivals, the Prayer for Rain, the Eclipse Prayer, and Funerals-10a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Yahya ibn Yahya and Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us, and the wording is that of Yahya. Abu Bakr said: He narrated to us. And Yahya said: Waki' informed us, from Malik ibn Mughall, from Simak ibn Harb, from Jabir ibn Samurah, who said:
an unsaddled horse was brought to the Prophet (ﷺ) and he rode on it when he returned after having offered the funeral prayer of Ibn Dahdah and we walked on foot around him. أتي النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بفرس مُعرَورى فركبه حين انصرف من جنازة بن الدحداح ونحن نمشي حوله
Sahih Muslim 965a

The Shaykh : Mu'arrari: with a dammah on the mīm and a fathah on the rā'.
This hadith contains evidence of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) attendance at funerals. There is no doubt that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was the most eager of people for good, and that he would not miss a funeral of which he was aware except for what was better and more beneficial for the servants of Allah. It also contains evidence of the permissibility of the one following the funeral riding during the return, and this is an explicit text.
It also contains evidence that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was among those who rode horses. For this reason, he rode this mu'arrari horse, meaning a bare horse with no saddle, which indicates that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was counted among those who ride horses, and indeed he was. Look at his (peace and blessings be upon him) riding of Abu Talhah's horse when he heard a commotion in the city. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) went out while riding the horse, and he pursued the news but found nothing. Then the people went out toward the sound, and there was the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) meeting them, saying: "You will not be attacked, you will not be attacked," on a bare horse. This indicates that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was among those who ride horses. And in the hadith of Abu Talhah that I mentioned, there is evidence of his bravery. If someone asks: "Does he ride when accompanying the funeral before burial?" We say: If it is for the sake of persistence, there is no harm. But if it is due to lack of need, it is better not to ride. If someone asks: "Is the funeral carried or carried on the shoulders—carried on a mount, a donkey, a car, or on the shoulders?" We say: On the shoulders is better, so that people do not be deprived of the reward—of the reward of carrying—from one aspect, and because that is more effective in admonition for those by whom it passes. And we should stay away from the funerals of disbelievers, because the funerals of disbelievers, as mentioned by the hadith scholar of Sham, Al-Albani (may Allah guide him), are that the disbelievers make their funerals like wedding parties, due to the abundance of cars and the noise, wanting to make people forget the Hereby by that, and as if this is a procession of joy. So in such a case, when the cars come in groups, there is imitating the disbelievers in this regard. All this is if there is no need. But with need, such as the distance of the cemetery, the narrowness of the markets, the abundance of cars, rain, severe heat, severe cold, and the like, there is no harm in carrying it in a car. Some people now say that carrying it in a car is needed by people due to the abundance of cars that people encounter, for if they carried it on their shoulders, they would obstruct the road and tire themselves from dealing with the cars. And if it is in a car, it is known that the car makes its way. But whenever it is possible to carry it on the shoulders, that is preferable without doubt.
