The Book of Friday Prayer, the Two Festivals, the Prayer for Rain, the Eclipse Prayer, and Funerals-10a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: And Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna and Muhammad ibn Bashar narrated to us, and the wording is that of Ibn al-Muthanna. They said: Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us, and Shu'bah narrated to us from Sammak ibn Harb from Jabir ibn Samurah, who said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed over Ibn al-Dahdah, then a bare horse was brought, and a man tethered it, so he mounted it and began to move it about while we followed him, running behind him. Then a man from the group said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How many bunches of dates are hanging or dangling in Paradise for Ibn al-Dahdah," or Shu'bah said: "for Abu al-Dahdah."

The Shaykh : Allah is the Greatest, may Allah be pleased with him. This was a man from the Ansar, and it appears that he, may Allah be pleased with him, gave much charity in the form of date bunches, because he says: "How many bunches of dates are hanging or dangling in Paradise for Ibn al-Dahdah," or Abu al-Dahdah. And his statement here regarding a bare horse, as mentioned previously, means that it was not saddled. And his statement that a man tethered it: the meaning of tethering here is restraining and preventing, not the known meaning of tethering, which is tying the hand.
And his statement:
He would move it aboutيتوقَّص به
means that it would buck with him while he kept his steps close together. It seems this horse was a strong, good horse. In any case: there is evidence for the permissibility of riding for one who follows a funeral procession, but only after returning. Look at what al-Nawawi said regarding the other wording, because the apparent meaning of the other wording is that he rode before the burial.
