Did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) perform wudu' every time he was in a state of ritual purity, such that it is not obligatory to perform wudu' for tawaf?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : We know that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) performed wudu' in all his states, in Hajj and otherwise, and this, O Shaykh...?

The Shaykh : He loved to be in a state of ritual purity, without doubt. For this reason, when one of the Companions greeted him, he did not return the greeting until he performed tayammum, and he said:
I disliked to mention Allah except in a state of purity. إني كرهت أن أذكر الله إلا على طهور
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 3:139
