The reciter: Ubayd Allah ibn 'Umar ibn Maysarah al-Qawariri narrated to us, and Yazid ibn Zura' narrated to us, and Sa'id ibn Abi Arubah narrated to us from Qatadah from Salih Abi al-Khalil from Abi 'Uqlamah al-Hashimi from Abi Sa'id al-Khudri: That the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent an army to Autas on the day of Hunayn. They encountered an enemy and fought them, prevailing over them and taking captives. Some of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) were hesitant to have intercourse with them because of their husbands who were among the polytheists. So Allah the Exalted and Mighty revealed regarding this: "And the married women, except those your right hands possess," meaning that they are lawful for you once their waiting period has ended..

The Shaykh : His statement "and the married women" means those who are married, and this is one of the meanings of "al-muhsanah." It has another meaning, which is free women, as in the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And whoever among you cannot [find] the means to marry free, believing women ومن لم يستطع منكم طولا أن ينكح المحصنات المؤمنات
[An-Nisa 4:25]
. And it has a third meaning, which is chaste women, as in the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Indeed, those who [falsely] accuse chaste, unaware and believing women are cursed in this world and the Hereafter إن الذين يرمون المحصنات الغافلات المؤمنات لعنوا في الدنيا والآخرة
[An-Nur 24:23]
. The context and the circumstances determine the meaning. Yes. And his statement "once their waiting period has ended" here does not refer to a waiting period ('iddah) but to a period of purification (istibra'), though it is referred to as a waiting period because it resembles it in the prohibition of intercourse with the woman being purified, just as with the woman in a waiting period. The period of purification, if she is a menstruating woman, is one menstruation; if she is pregnant, it is the delivery of the child; and if she is one who does not menstruate, it is the passage of one month. Some scholars said that one who does not menstruate does not need a period of purification because we know her womb is pure. Yes.
