The reciter: Abu al-Yaman narrated to us, Shu'ayb informed us, al-Zuhri informed us, al-Sa'ib ibn Yazid, the son of Namar's sister, informed me that Huyayt ibn 'Abd al-Uzza informed him that 'Abd Allah ibn al-Sa'di informed him:
That he came to 'Umar during his caliphate, and 'Umar said to him, "Did I not inform you that you are in charge of people's affairs, and when you are given the position of governor, you dislike it?" I said, "Yes." 'Umar said, "What do you want regarding that?" I said, "I have horses and slaves, and I am in a good state, and I want my position to be a charity for the Muslims." 'Umar said, "Do not do that, for I wanted what you wanted. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to give me the stipend, and I would say, 'Give it to someone poorer than me,' until he gave me wealth one time, and I said, 'Give it to someone poorer than me.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Take it and make it your property, and give charity from it. Whatever comes to you from this wealth while you are not seeking it eagerly or asking for it, take it; otherwise, do not follow it with your desire.'"
