Why were the oaths repeated fifty times?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The question remains: why were the oaths repeated fifty times, or why fifty oaths? We say that the original purpose of repetition is for emphasis. Since the matter of blood carries great gravity, the oaths were repeated. As for why it was specifically fifty oaths, we cannot say why it was fifty, or why it was not five, ten, twenty, or a hundred. This is a matter left to Allah and His Messenger, for we cannot grasp the wisdom behind setting a specific number. For example, why are the prayers seventeen rak'ahs in the five daily prayers? Allah knows best. So, the reason for the repetition is known: it is for emphasis due to the danger of blood. If someone asks, "What if a person swears an oath and then swears fifty oaths?" we say that is not the case. A person may swear an oath, and then the matter becomes magnified in his mind, causing him to hesitate, does he not? That is, perhaps arrogance in sin takes hold of him, and then he backs down. This happens often. As for a thing that has already occurred in a person's hand, he may disdain it; he magnifies the oath when it is repeated to him, and perhaps he finds it easy the first time but then finds it difficult, so he does not swear. Through this, we know that the qasamah (oath-taking in blood cases) did not depart from the principle of governance or from the legal causes. As for the fact that the accused swear fifty oaths, the answer is the same as the answer regarding the repetition of oaths on the side of the claimants: that is a matter of emphasis due to the danger of blood, because they may be lying in their denial.
