The Book of Faith-05b

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Qutaybah ibn Sa'id narrated to us, and Layth narrated to us from Ibn 'Ujlan from Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Huban from Ibn Mahiriz from al-Sunabhi from 'Ubadah ibn al-Samit that he said:
I entered upon him while he was dying, so I wept. He said, "Be calm, why are you weeping? By Allah, if I am martyred, I will testify for you; if I intercede, I will intercede for you; and if I am able, I will benefit you." Then he said, "By Allah, there is no hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in which there is good for you that I have not narrated to you, except for one hadith, and I will narrate it to you today, as I am being surrounded by death. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever testifies that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, Allah has forbidden him the Fire.'"
.

The Shaykh : The structure of the hadith has some awkwardness in its beginning: "from al-Sunabhi from 'Ubadah ibn al-Samit that he said: I entered upon him." On the surface, the subject of "said" refers to 'Ubadah, but it actually refers to al-Sunabhi. He entered upon 'Ubadah while he was in the state of dying. This indicates that 'Ubadah ibn al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated this hadith at the time of his death. This is similar to what Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) did when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told him that the right of Allah upon His slaves is that they worship Him and associate nothing with Him, and the right of the slaves upon Allah is that He does not punish whoever does not associate anything with Him. Mu'adh said, "O Messenger of Allah, should I not give the people good news?" He said, "Do not give them good news, lest they become complacent." But Mu'adh informed people of it at the time of his death out of fear of sin. Similarly, 'Ubadah ibn al-Samit seems to have held back from narrating this hadith for fear that people would become complacent relying on it.
