The reciter: Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us, Abu Asim narrated to us; and Ibn Numayr narrated to us, my father narrated to us; and Abu Kuraib narrated to us, he said: Ibn Idris narrated to us, all of them from Isma'il ibn Abi Khalid; and Yahya ibn Habib al-Harithi narrated to us, and the wording is his, he said: Ma'mar narrated to us from Isma'il, who said: I heard Qays narrating from Abu Mas'ud, who said:
The Shaykh : The point of interest here is his statement: "Faith and harshness." This indicates that faith is a cause for the softness of the heart, and this is what is observed. You find that a man, if he is truly a believer, has a soft heart. Allah the Exalted has pointed to this in His saying:[Ali 'Imran 3:159]
And His saying: They are the camel herders, because the camel herder possesses a degree of harshness and roughness that others do not have, unlike the sheep herder, who possesses tranquility, mercy, and peace. For this reason, the Prophets (peace and blessings be upon them) used to herd sheep, as is established regarding the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). As for the camel owners, they possess roughness, harshness, and coarseness, and this is observed to this day.
You find a man who has camels and no sheep to be rough and arrogant, thinking he is above people, unlike the sheep owner. Can it be taken from this that a person may be influenced by his companion, even if he is not of his kind? Yes, he can be influenced, just as he is influenced by food. For this reason, animals with fangs from among the beasts of prey, or with talons from among the birds, are forbidden.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured with his hand toward Yemen and said: "Know that faith is here, and that harshness and the hardness of hearts are in the camel herders, at the roots of the camels' tails, where the horns of Satan appear in Rabi'ah and Mudar."
The Shaykh : The point of interest here is his statement: "Faith and harshness." Allah the Exalted has pointed to this in His saying:
So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you.
